Comments on: Yes, even some of these fledgling railroads feel the need to celebrate their beginning by hosting a “Last Spike” ceremony. And this is what we see taking place at the Port Colborne Harbour Railway (now GIO) opening ceremonies back in 1997. Photographers abound, as well as a microphone to record the last ‘John Henry’ whack to signal the railroad is open for business. On the left in the striped t-shirt is RP’er Greg Smith, flanked by brother and fellow RP’er Rob on the right and father Larry on the left; both intent on documenting this scene for posterity.

I am there (back row) ..you can see roof repairs underway on the former 1925 CNR station by Joe Feta’s Greek Village (out of St. Catharines). In addition to the roof, new HVAC was added and the building was sub divided into east , west and centre units. For a time Trillium was in the east unit. While Joe Feta’s did not make a go of it in the west unit, …The Smokin Buddha is still going strong in the centre featuring a decent beverage patio…with some luck GIO will be moving tank cars or covered hoppers as you enjoy a frosty .
