Canadian National 2-8-2 "Mikados" 3466 and 3459 rest outside CNR's famed steam locomotive shops in Stratford ON, in 1958. These had previously been converted into oil burners for Western Canada. Both were built by MLW as part of the S1f class in 1913, and by 1958 their time was nearly up: they would be scrapped in 1959 and 1961 respectively.

The CN's Stratford backshops, built for the GTR in 1908 for heavy overhauls and maintenance of its steam locomotive fleet, didn't fit in with CN's plans to dieselize its operations and were officially closed on March 31st, 1964. After surviving a few different owners and even a fire, the City of Stratford acquired the former shop buildings in 2010.

  1. CNR steam locomotive have a family appeal, probably because of the Elesco feedwater heater and the number plate under the headlight. Pound for pound, they are as beautiful as any design on any RR in North America.

  2. Were the two mikados converted from coal to oil and then back to coal?

  3. Compare my Stratford photos on peterbooronflickr

  4. WOW !!!

  5. Pic taken likely in June, note the celebratory flags above the CNR lettering on the building.
