Before CN and NS started buying on the used market, CP was picking up SD40-2s back in the '90s.

Their lineage is obvious as 5426 & 5429 grind their way up the Leaside Hill at Victoria Park Avenue. Such is the grade here that on occasion heavy eastbounds would get an assist, even after diesels replaced steam.

  1. whoa that GP40-2W

  2. Dang James, that is one heck of a set of power! Pair of gators on the point AND the HLCX oddity.

Hostie, it appears to be HLCX 4290, fmr CN 9640, now HCRY 3010. I caught the 4290 a few weeks after this shot was taken westbound through Port Hope, ON. Not nearly as interesting as this consist… mine was CP 5611, CP 1599, HLCX 4290, CP 5544. Never saw it again, but back in pre-SMS ‘foamwire’ days, once was pretty damn good.

  3. Cool – I can’t say I’ve ever seen a widecab HLCX leaser like that… wonder when that dissapeared off the roster?
