CP train 11, the Toronto section of "The Canadian" heads north on the Mactier sub main in Vaughan. FP7A CP 4071 is leading, a single FP7A in this number range being typical power on this train at the time. Train 11 will meet Train 1, the Montreal section of the westbound "Canadian", at CP Sudbury station.
Just ahead is the signal and power-operated switch at the north end of "Elder" passing siding.
Just over 4 months after this picture, on October 29 1978 VIA assumed responsibility for CP's passenger rail services. An early casualty was the Toronto section of the Canadian, CP trains 11 and 12.
VIA's 1979 timetable shows their rationalized transcontinental passenger service, with the "Canadian" trains 1 and 2 running between Montreal and Vancouver, while "Super Continental" trains 3 and 4 ran between Toronto and Vancouver. Winnipeg was one station that both trains used - therefore the recommended place to change between trains.
