VIA's Canadian, not long after taking over CP's passenger operations and still running on most of the original CPR routing, leaves downtown Toronto at Bathurst Street after having left Union Station minutes before. Power today is yet-to-be-repainted ex-CP Rail FP9 1409 and F9B 1964 (renumbered from 4477, both units now owned by VIA), with a steam generator car and mix of CP painted and VIA painted (ex-CN) equipment. The train is #1, running Toronto to Vancouver, as the Montreal-Sudbury portion had been cancelled (the former CN Super Continental ran from Montreal) and the Toronto-Sudbury section (formerly separate as #11/12) had replaced it in Fall of 1978 (but routing out of Toronto had switched to the CN Newmarket Sub as far as to Reynolds/Boyne). Also notable is the sparsely populated Toronto Skyline and the CN Tower, finished a few years prior. The GO single level cars are stored in CN's Bathurst North Yard, still partially used as a freight yard. CN S13's for switching Spadina coachyard congregate on the right, with Spadina roundhouse in the distance. As well, brand new Ford Econoline vans (probably from Oakville) ride in early enclosed autoracks, bypassing Union Station on a freight via the "High Line".
