Brand new CN GP35 4001 poses with sister 4000 at Mimico in October 1964, probably after their first trip from GMD London. CN's first foray into higher horsepower second generation diesels were orders in 1964 of the two pictured GP35's from GMD, and two C424's from MLW (3200-3201).

The GP35 model was never that popular with Canadian railways: CP ordered just 24 examples, while CN dabbled in 2 and later came back for 16 of the GP35's successor: the GP40 (followed by over 200 of the Canadian safety cab equipped GP40-2L/W units).

Both of CN's GP35 units were eventually renumbered 9300 and 9301, and lasted in service until being retired in 1984. 4001 (as 9301) was stripped for parts and scrapped at Mandak Metals.

  1. CN4000/9300 would eventually migrate down south to become DMV (Dakota, Missouri Valley & Western) No. 323 and continue to operate into the mid 1990′s. DMV would also acquire ex CNSD50F’s, another ill fated EMD/GMD model. Similar to the GP35; one step too far with the legendary EMD 567, one step too far with the EMD 645.
