With some fall colour still abound - a rare weekend extra sees GEXR 516 with 17 cars of potash heading west for Agromart at Kellys (near Belton, Ontario). GEXR 516 is passing the former St. Marys station, built by the Grand Trunk in 1858 and used in railway service until the 1970's mostly as a train order office for trains to/from the Forest sub. St Mary's more modern (1907) station is in use for VIA Rail closer to downtown. Note the GTW Caboose placed at the junction - which is now used as a off leash dog park. The caboose has seen better days. Why would a GTW Caboose be considered for St. Marys - a loose connection to the former Grand Trunk?? The Canadian Grand Trunk ceased to exist upon joining the CNR in 1923 - the connection between the two, in my humble opinion, is a loose one based on name only.

  1. Nice shot. How common are daylight moves on this portion of the Guelph sub? I always thought they ran to London at night.

  2. Historical note is that way back when Thomas Edison, as a 17 yr old, once worked as a night operator at this station. Nice shot, by the way. A location I have yet to catch a train passing.

  3. No more GEXR runs to London, Kelly’s is as far as any GEXR movements go now.

  4. Iain I figure a run this way happens a few times a month when it’s busy, but probably mostly at night.

  5. Nice shot Steve
