RAILROADER ON THE ROCK. Longtime Engineer Ray Boyd carefully applies the throttle of leading unit NF210 #941 of Terra Transport Mixed Extra 941 West to couple some additional container flats at Grand Falls during Christmas week of 1987. The 1200 horsepower unit with a CN Class of GR-12-x and built by GMD of London Ontario, along with sister 940, was one of 9 in the final order shipped to Newfoundland in 1960. This photo gives an excellent view of the unique end cabs of the NF210's and the very similar NF110's. Its new paint and the excellent maintenance carried out by the shop crews in St. John's belies the fact that these two units were 27 years old. Always well spoken and a consummate gentleman, Ray would later be the 'Mystery Guest' on CBC's 'Front Page Challenge' when the top news story was the shutdown on the Newfoundland Railway!

  1. Really ‘neat’ photo and quite the caption !!!

  2. Thank you Mr. Mooney! I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. A few minutes either side of this event and I would have missed it. – Kenneth

  3. What I find neat is until this photo, I didn’t realise they put a small CN Logo under the cab!

  4. Stephen, if you look closely, you’ll also see it applied to the baggage and coach in Image 30884, the caboose in 28786 and both the coach and caboose in 16913. Certainly another unique feature of train operations on the Rock! – Ken
