Perhaps ancient history and not a very good image. A random shot of the Locotrol panel on a BC Rail MLW 700 series unit. This was an early version of Locotrol I and then we advanced to Locotrol II and onto the new DPU technology. With Locotrol I & II only one remote unit could be controlled although many locomotives could be "MU'd" with the slave unit whereas with newer DPU technology and software, many locomotives can be placed throughout a train and controlled by the lead locomotive.

  1. Very ancient history, especially on an MLW. You must’ve loved them vs. the GMD’s.

Was this factory installed, or installed later?

  2. Most likely the RCL / Locotrol equipment was factory installed as there was a lot of wiring, radio equipment and air brake manifolds required. The MLW’s were nice, GMD’s were noisy and vibrationed. Perhaps my favorite loco was the GE Dash-9 “big blue” units that BC Rail had.

  3. Great to see the early set up. Was it possible to run the remote unit(s) at a different throttle setting from the lead units? For example, could the remotes be in run 4 while the leads were in run 8?

  4. Yes, with Locotrol I as well as Locotrol II the remote units could be run in “independent motoring” with the selector switch seen in the middle of the console. We could power up or down as well as change the dynamic brake setting on the remotes independently from what setting on the lead unit. Also we could have the remotes in power mode and the lead units in dynamic brake mode. It was simple technology as compared to new DPU system. I liked some features of the Locotrol II, had a “brake pipe rise” warning as well as a flow meter showing the air flow on the remote unit. DPU system is okay but I did not like some of the features including small buttons for selecting options as well as the small display screen. Really had to look closely for info on the screen.

  5. Thank you for the interesting replies. ????

  6. The question marks should be :)
