The final train to run on the Doney & St-Francois spurs and the final CN 564 stops so a switch can be thrown just before picking up the last 4 cars on the line (hoppers at Ipex). They were supposed to start pulling up the tracks today already, in preparation for the construction of REM's light rail line to the Trudeau airport to begin.

  1. Wow Great Catch!! So really this is the last train to ever grease these rails?! Glad you were able to capture the historic moment!! Thanks for sharing!!
Not too far from me lies the Waterloo Region Light Rail Transit which runs on the GEXR (soon to be CN) Waterloo Spur and apparently it kind of surprised me that CN is discontinuing freight operations because in Waterloo the LRT line still sees roughly 4 freight movements a week. Guess these businesses weren’t really fond of fighting for their rail service unlike Chemtura in Elmira who would almost certainly put up a fight if CN ever talks of discontinuing freight on their line!

  2. Thanks. Yes, this is indeed the last train. I believe this light rail line will be running 24/7, so no way to run freights at night.

  3. And in terms of fighting for rail service, warehouse XTL on this line has had to relocate to a new warehouse elsewhere in Montreal that will have rail service.

  4. Always unfortunate when last runs occur! It’s grwat you were able to photo document this Michael!

@Railfsn99 it’s the Region of Waterloo that owns the Waterloo Spur, not GEXR or CN. GEXR currently has the contract to operate the freight, CN has the contract to maintain the 2 segments on each side of the LRT.
Chemtura is no longer too, it’s LanXess now.
