After the day's goings-on were complete, a quick side-trip to the Bloor-Danforth subway (before heading down to Union to hop the GO bus home) was usually in order to see if there were any H4 subway cars out and about. At that time the first of the new TTC "Toronto Rocket" subway cars were on the property testing, and target numero uno for replacement was the remaining ~34 or so Hawker Siddeley Canada H4 subway cars that were pushing 36 years old (the last of the original H-series cars with bench seating, no air conditioning, and the profiled end caps around the destination signs dating from the original 60's H1's). There was usually a set or two out in rush hour ping-ponging between Kennedy and Kipling mixed in with the scads of newer H6 and T1 consists, it was often just a matter of waiting and timing to find it.On one such evening after hopping off a westbound to try our luck at Keele Subway Station, we find TTC H4 5642 heading an eastbound consist, paused briefly to load/unload passengers before continuing east for Kennedy at the other end of the line. Hastily scrawled notes for that day show the full consist here was 5642/43/52/53/06/07 (we had caught a ride on 5607 earlier on the way downtown), and preceded by another eastbound H4 set of 5633/32/31/30/48/49. Enough TR cars would be delivered by January 2012 to warrant putting out to pasture the few remaining H4's for good. A couple were kept to become work cars, but most were cut up for scrap.
