CN's Simcoe station is pictured in May 1968, located at Mile 73.2 of CN's Cayuga Sub. Note the "CN N&W Freight Office" sign, as N&W had running rights over CN on the Cayuga Sub dating back to the Wabash days.

  1. What a beautiful piece of railroad architecture! Elegant little station building offering service and comfort. I hope it’s still in existence!

  2. Always a pleasure to see some shots from my home town! There aren’t nearly enough out there from Simcoe in my opinion.

  3. Classic!!! What a great little cottage that would make!!

  4. OH…MY….GOSH! Excellent photo Bill of a time gone by. Absolutely love this colour photo of CN Simcoe station on the old Airline.
To answer PRR’s question…this little gem was actually first a station just east in the small hamlet of Renton. There used to be s larger structure here in Simcoe that resembled more of the old CN station in Acton. That burned down late 30s and a former passenger replaced it as a temporary structure. I believe due to ‘economics’ there came a time that CN decided a station stop at Renton was no longer required. Therefore this building was moved west and replaced the passenger car sometime around 1945. This building was sadly demolished likely just a couple of years after Bill’s photo was taken. But it served Simcoe for approx. 20 years. What a gem indeed!!! :)

  5. Thanks for a very informative write-up, Todd. I have never seen a photo of this station before.

  6. A lot of class for a small little station.

  7. Yes, I recall this posting. But the photo, as much as it is a great shot, does not do the station justice as the new colour shot does.
Goes to show you how angles can change your perception.
I did not link the two images………

  8. Thank you Mr. Host for that link of Bill’s other photo of this station. Don’t know about the rest of the members here….but the colour photo is now a favourite of mine!
To Arnold…you’re welcome my friend. Mr. Knott summed it up best that, with Simcoe being his hometown there should be more photos as it was also served by three roads…two under what became the CN conglomerate. Having lived in Simcoe for a few years myself, I am not singling out this town because we know of many more locations where more photos should be included. the sometimes hardest factor is finding them.

  9. True, Todd; that Simcoe rail photos are rather scarce. I only have the ones I shot at the 1975 wreck. I mean, why hang around watching for a train in Simcoe when there are all those other great places? As in Canfield?
It reminds me a bit like Niagara Falls. If you want some postcards from there, they are a dime a dozen……but ONLY if they are to do with the tourist area. Others? almost rare.

  10. Oh, and yes, this image is right up there in my “top 10″ station shots on this site.
Delightful, quaint, and oh badly wishing I had a little place like this out in the country.

  11. Hear you there Arnold…small town vs. the cities. I’d do the same where there was more action to catch. Nonetheless, a great little ‘cottage’, or home this would have made. Too bad there wasn’t more care taken to preserve said structures. Also, just noted the old freight shed in behind painted in typical CN colours. A shade of red, with cream coloured trim around the windows. Can’t remember if that structure still exists, although altered to house businesses in this now industrial area of Simcoe.

  12. Living in London I never had the chance to see this station but my wife & her brother played around that area in the 1950′s Then she moved to port Dover & lived right by the LE&N tracks & the LE&N station. She remembers the Simcoe station and thanks you for the memories!
