TTC PCC 4550 (an A9-class car originally built for Cincinnati in 1947) passes A8-class PCC 4542, both operating on the mid-town St. Clair route on St. Clair Avenue West at Caledonia Road. 4550 is about to pass under Canadian National's Newmarket Sub near the CN St. Clair Ave station, whose platform extended south over the bridge. Note the ever-present Milnes Coal & Fuel dealer on the left (who themselves had a rail siding) and the typical assortment of 60's automobiles including Ford Mustangs and VW Bugs. The Newmarket Sub used to cross St. Clair Avenue at-grade where the streetcars are pictured, and streetcars on St. Clair terminated at loops on either side of the CN tracks (requiring an on-foot transfer between Dovercourt cars to the west and St. Clair cars to the east). A grade separation project undertaken in the late 1920's/early 1930's resulted in a new overpass constructed at St. Clair to allow St. Clair streetcars to travel further west, as well as a new CN St. Clair Avenue station (to the left out of frame) that replaced the old Davenport Station further south. Much of the old rail line alignment became a lead to local spurs and sidings to serve customers to the south of St. Clair, notably numerous Italian wine and produce suppliers like Darrigo Brothers, Pietro Culotta, the Meschino Banana Company, and Caledonia Food Distributors (A&P also had a rail-served warehouse nearby).Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.

  1. Wonderful!

  2. Nice Mustang!

  3. And the same space is available for Toronto’s current traffic volume!! It’s a wonderful shot.

  4. I was just there Saturday morning, waiting in a long line to make my left-hand turn on to Caledonia. It’s amazing how much this area – and especially the St. Clair and Keele area – have changed in the 20+ years I’ve been living in this part of Toronto.
