Here's a Sudbury rock cut in the daylight! Six months since the merger, it's become a near-daily occurrence to see CP and KCS power paired up on cross-country intermodals. Under the low autumn sun, CPKC 119 navigates the Sprecher s-bend at a leisurely pace – it first has to let the eastbound Budd car enter the double track at Flanagan, about a mile up the track.

It's not a perfect entry for the time machine, given my location a bit closer to the rails, but thinking back to <a href="https://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=56609"> Arnold's shot from September 1996 </a>, it's amazing how much life has returned to the rocky hills of Sudbury in less than three decades. All thanks to the tireless efforts of scientists, industry and volunteers who've worked on the regreening program since the 1970s. I should go back and try to find Arnold's exact spot, ideally when the lighting is less harsh than it was on this day!

After a couple of days of snowfall, Huron Central power (OVR units 3410 and 2118) are soaking up the afternoon sun. Meanwhile, a rare-ish CP SD60M appears beside one of Sudbury's many large snowbanks. Behind it all, a Canadian flag flaps in the winter breeze, two days after its 60th birthday.

I don't like going train-watching for the sake of itself, but rather like to incorporate trains into other adventures. For instance, massive whiteouts swept the city on this day, and I decided to take that opportunity to snowshoe along the rail line on Ramsey Lake. In hindsight, the snow was a bit too thick for good photography, but it helps to set the mood. Gotta get these prime seasonal shots when we can!

<b>A merging of the eras</b> — Train 421 has finished working Sudbury yard and is now grinding up-grade to the end of the double track at Flanagan. Today's units are very fusion-y, featuring both a CP and (faded) KCS GE product, followed by a couple of multimark SD40-2s with a ballast set. The train is hitting late-evening sun while a thick bed of smoke fills the Sudbury basin in the background; I remember it being difficult to get the colour/light balance right here.

Despite thick clouds and occasional flurries, it's a big crowd waiting for the 2024 CPKC Holiday Train's stop in Cartier, ON. The former CPR station, now used by Via, is open for people to warm up and swap a donation for some hot chocolate or a baked good. These small-town stops are incomparable to the big cities, for all the right reasons.

I debated on whether or not to post this one, or whether I should wait to repeat this photo under a more impressive northern lights display, but here you go anyhow! A piece of snowfighting equipment <i>(owned by Mansour, I think? Anyone know reporting marks for this unit?)</i> begins its long summer rest as the fading pillars of a solar storm disappear northward. There was a strong display about a half hour earlier, which I shot above Onaping High Falls.

I wasn't the only person to shoot CP 3747 at the fuel pad in Sudbury yesterday, though I wish I had my camera when I drove by earlier in the day, when there were three SD40-2s coupled behind it in the same spot. By the evening, only 6028 remained.

CP 421 I presume based on the cargo waits on a crew change at the west end of Larchwood. That hump in the ground just behind the head end is the edge of the meteorite impact crater that formed the Sudbury basin. Incidentally, if you want to <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/xAbJ8y28tUepnjkj7">see this train in Google Maps</a>, the StreetView car must have been by within an hour on either side of my visit. I was looking at StreetView today, saw a familiar train and decided to upload my shot.

Grainer CP 322 navigates the s-bend at Sprecher, mile 82 of the Cartier Sub. I definitely need to come back when the snow isn't knee-deep to find better angles to show off that massive cut.

We drove through Parry Sound as this one was crossing the trestle, then failed our chase attempt to Nobel as the crew had it pegged at track speed. We crossed over to the 400/69 and hoped that by Pointe we'd have caught it, though unsure of its exact location. A local asking us how we were doing right as the train approached threw us off a bit, but I think we both ended up with passable captures.

After hearing that the OVR job made quick work in Sudbury and was ready to turn around back to North Bay, I scoured the map for any favourable bend that wouldn't be backlit. Eastbounds in the afternoon, what a joy to shoot! Satellite views showed a clearing here with some elevation across from the tracks, at a spot that also featured a brief stretch of nearly due-south trackage. Score! We decided to try it in the hopes the hillside would be clear enough for a shot. <br>Here, U430 has returned to home rails on the Cartier Sub and skirts a marsh, looking more like a lake with the springtime flows.

A side of railroading that most of us don't ever have to witness. A moderate ice storm swept through Sudbury overnight, followed by warm temperatures and a thick fog for good measure. CP crews are working to pump water out from switches in the yard, an important task before we returned to seasonal temperatures the following day and everything froze solid again. Based on the three-foot-deep snow I trudged through the day before, there's going to be a lot more pumping to come this year. Here, HCRY 913 gets ready to head west next to the waiting U52 (I thought I heard 52, but U55 is the job mostly working the yard so I'm doubting myself).<br><br>Also of note, the left worker (never got his name) told me a story of a woman who had some sort of episode and drove a brand-new pickup <i>through</i> the yard, crashing into a couple of tank cars in two different locations before coming to a stop across and far up the tracks by the station. If you know any workers in Sudbury, get them to tell the story and show you photos some time. Hope she's doing alright.

GEXR in the north! As 431 approached, I thought to myself, 'heh, it looks like those people who swap LED headlights into their lifted trucks.' Upon closer inspection of my image, that is indeed the case with GEXR 2123 (formerly LLPX 2236). I've been trying to figure out when and why this unit had its standard ditch lights swapped for LEDs. I've been able to determine that it happened sometime between <a href="http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=5569014"> August 2016 </a> and <a href="http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4916029"> October 2017 </a>. This train was full of surprises. First, we were anticipating a roadswitcher to be heading east, not a through freight. Then, a CN unit rolled by as mid-DPU (the first of two trains like that on this day) and finally, the tail end had two units together as rear helpers. Not a bad improvement over a roadswitcher.
