The train consisting of three cars 66, 62 and 63 plus the Little Red Caboose 602, filled with excited children and parents, is alongside Union Depot (previously the North Pole). Port Stanley Terminal Rail’s L1 Stanley (although perhaps not visible) is pushing its Christmas train downgrade through the Kettle Creek Valley on the historic tracks of Port Stanley and London Railway. Santa Claus hopped on and off the train, this year, when passing through the storage yard located a short distance from the PSTR station. The timely skim of snow overnight adds to the scene and festive occasion.
This photo may qualify for the Time Machine in conjunction with a photo by Greg Roach ID: 21596 taken at Union (49 years previous) on a UCRS Excursion from Toronto to Port Stanley.

When passing by on Durham St, an inbound car was evident, but something seemed different regarding the critter’s customary parking spot. By the time that I had bypassed construction and traffic to reach the outside parking lot, the crew had already spotted an empty car on the outbound track. The 2-person crew assisting the move conveniently scooted about in an EZGO (22) 4-wheeler. The Trackside Guide describes this VALE critter as GE, serial 31716, 2/1953 and 45T … acquired new, ballasted to 50T.
Is this colourful critter one and the same as the INCO yellow critter captured by Paul Chapman 12/18/1980 and recently submitted by / from Dean Brown’s collection? Unique covers have been added in the interim, as a safety precaution most likely, to prevent riding on the footboards per se.

Waterloo Central Railway took pocession of pristine N0. 8140 earlier this week. The weather at St Jacobs turned wintery which, of course, bodes well for the Christmas Jolly Journey Train, Santa and the many families excitingly waiting for their turn for a ride. We were allowed a tour, during the morning, of the Restoration and Maintenance Facility which included an opportunity to explore and to photograph the colourful, impressive WCR 8140. This classy locomotive was masterfully restored by Lambton Diesel Specialists (LDS). During the afternoon, N0. 8140 braved the elements going on her inaugral / test run on the Waterloo Spur north of St Jacobs. WCR 8140, upon return, idles on the siding behind the shop, providing an unexpected viewing by those riding the 3:00 p.m. train. KUDOS to WCR & LDS.' height='150' width='200' />
Just driving by Railview Transload Elevators, this March evening on the way home, and to my surprise an extremely late CN 502 was clearly visible idling on the main. The crew had obviously run out of hours and conveniently parked their train under the bright lights of the new, Mustard Silos. A rare photo opportunity indeed and one not to be missed. I had sufficient time to capture this setting from both sides of the power CN 2295 and CN 2560 before the new crew arrived to continue south to Garnet Yard.
I believe this capture qualifies for the Time Machine in conjunction with John Eull’s 1986 photo (Photo ID: 4356) and my existing companion photo of 2011 (Photo Id: 24926). These three photos present CP, SOR and CN powered trains at the same location albeit hauling different freight and depicting expanded facilities/service, etc.

Here, the crew of OSH Rail Services returns east after hooking onto a cut of pipe cars to switch out the Welland Tube facility using the service sidings located mid-way between MP 2.08 and 1.6 of the Welland Tube Spur (formerly CASO). MPRX 101 gives off the neatest sound approaching Rusholme Road and passing the former Martech Rail compound with GIO (TRRY) 108 idling in the background. The crew deposited the cut of empty pipe cars and, in turn, pulled out five loaded cars placing them on the Spur’s siding for GIO to transfer, later in the afternoon, to Southern Yard. This photo was captured while waiting for the anticipated ‘Moving Em Out’ photo ID: 49901. Some days it just comes together and more!

Although the Welland Tube Spur is only a few miles in length these days, the rail bed is of remarkable soundness, remains weedless and, moreover, consists of 127# rail. The well drained rail bed is comprised of Dolomite Limestone originating from Hagersville (Rock City), ON.

The three switchers are finally off and rolling on the first leg of the trek to, the buyer, Lambton Diesel Specialist, Sarnia. The three switchers, recently vandalized, were repositioned to the middle track within the former Martech Rail compound by GIO on Monday past, inspected in preparation for rail transfer on Wednesday and then relocated by GIO to Southern Yard late Friday afternoon. This leaves the former Stelco switcher 615 as sole company for108 within the fenced compound. The Welland Tube crew had switched out the facility earlier placing the loaded pipe cars on the siding using MPRX 101. Daylight diminished and snow began to fall by the time GIO’s crew arrived Welland from working GIO (TRRY) 1859 & LDSX 7920 and their Port Colborne grain train. This image is made possible by the Port Stanley Terminal Rail’s ‘Rare Mileage Excursion’ of June 24, 2017 through the Kettle Creek Valley over the historic tracks of the London and Port Stanley Railway operating from Port Stanley to St. Thomas and the new Talbot Street Station. Numerous run-byes and an extended lunch / viewing time at St Thomas added to the enjoyment of the day.
Regular PSTR tourist rides pull north and push south and, as such, do not normally provide for leading power southbound as viewed from Sparta Line. PSTR Winnie L3 (44 ton - 1947), affixed with white flags, paused briefly at Union Station for fan viewing and photos. I don’t recall how I happened to capture this image without any fellow enthusiasts being in the photograph.
This image bodes well for the Time Machine and the Upper Canada Railway Society’s excursion, Toronto to Port Stanley, of June 14, 1975 (42 years hence) as captured by Greg Roach’s rpc photo ID: 21596. Northbound images depicting the rear of the train at Union are the norm these days on all trips excepting perhaps full line and rare mileage.
Incidentally, Winnie suddenly decided not to load for a second run-bye on the historic steel girder bridge just north of Roberts Line. After a short (rain) delay, PSTR Stanley L1 (25 ton - 1952) trundled to the rescue providing a double header opportunity per se with southbound leading power over the rustic bridge as Stanley the little engine that could lugged L3, passenger cars 68 & 62, and red caboose back to our starting point in Port Stanley. Double heading photo opportunities are undoubtedly rare involving PSTR regardless of running direction, etc.
Interesting day and great fun!

For several years, I searched in vain hoping to locate a historic photo of Garnet (formerly Hullsville) with a train crossing the wooden bridge atop the Sandusk Creek thinking it might have been a focal point for railfans of the day. I was advised, at a UCRS photo sharing session January 2020, that if anyone had such a photo it would be Bob Sandusky. When approached Bob smiled as he recalled a UCRS steam excursion at the hamlet and the curious church goers in the background attracted by the appearance and noise of such a large steam locomotive.

The Sandusk Creek and wooden, pilar trestle are not visible albeit the 3rd car (2nd passenger car) is just crossing the meandering stream with the shadow being the creek's incline. The landmark circular, stain glass window and upper exterior of the Garnet United Church is clearly visible between the passenger cars and smoke produced by CNR 6167. The red barns to the north, in front of the train, is the Cherry century homestead no less. My father Gordon’s herd prefix 'Elmcrest Holsteins' is visible in white letters on the front of the main dairy barn. Also, Garnet's ole Grand Trunk flag stop is in the picture as well - the small, red frame building with green roof just in front of the CNR 6167 to the right of the barn albeit partially hidden by trees. A white Holstein cow is seen standing to the immediate right of the flag stop. The flag stop was moved the short distance to the farm shortly after passenger service on the line ceased.

I could not have imagined receiving, within a few weeks of our conversation, a digital photograph of a steam run-by at this exact location and to be so inclusive. Even the rods on CNR 6167 are down. Kudos to Mr. Robert ‘Bob’ Sandusky.

The scene is quite different today as the trackage, Garnet to Jarvis, was abandoned in 1978 and now completely overgrown. The farm buildings have since been demolished and the flag stop relocated to a neighbouring property. (Pages 75 & 76 of Hamilton’s Other Railway and 46 & 47 Rails to The Lakes by Charles Cooper). A photo on page 334 by Elmer Treloar captures CNR 6167 on the same September 1962 excursion crossing the Grand River bridge at Caledonia. CNR 6167 still exists as many know and recently relocated to John Galt Park, Guelph.

The Hagersville Subdivision and, in particular, Hagersville - Garnet areas have been abuzz these past several weeks as CN personnel and contractors actively prepared for Sep 18th.CN 580, on its inaugural day freight, and powered by CN 9543, CN 9675 & CN 9473 is seen easing its way through major historic rail territory which may not be so obvious today. With comparison to photo id 29044 captured by Bill Thomson, the diamond, interlocking tower, CASO double trackage and now the station are gone. (In this sense, please enter this 2018 photo into the Time Machine in conjunction with Bill's 329044) A portion of the foundation of the CASO Hagersville interlocking and pole are visible to the left of nose of CN 9543 and note the shallow grave site where the Station stood until this week. CN 9543 is about to hit the diamond at least in my dreams. JMX's Demolition Cat can be seen huddled in the background awaiting the next mission. JMX Construction were vacated the compound just minutes before the arrival of CN 850 and chain of center-beams destined for Canadian Gypsum. CN's nifty, new tool/coordination structure (2 modular units) appears in the right foreground. Demolition of the iconic station was necessary given previous fire damage and lack of proper restoration thereafter. A fenced compound is planned for where the station stood and the surrounding area. This set of scanners / track sensors is located at MP 2.61 Walpole Concession 6 with the north configuration positioned at MP 7.22 Walpole Concession 11. RLHH 597 will soon be tied down at the extreme north end of Garnet Yard to await her new crew before departing for Paris West. This was truly an interesting day trackside with special thanks and appreciation to friendly crew of RLHH 3404.

Railfans familiar with the Hagersville Subdivision may be interested to know that a Communications Tower has been installed at the south end of Garnet Yard MP 4.7. Change of plans … the 'ole' Station at Hagersville is now considered unsafe and will undoubtedly be torn down. Previously buried cabling has been rerouted in preparation for two portable trailers. Interesting developments! ' height='150' width='200' />
Canada Day 2017 started off at 7:00 a.m. sharp with a double header steam excursion (APST 41 & ARM 1392) from Stettler to Big Valley and return (12:00). Guests were treated to champagne and orange juice on the train enroute and a full buffet style pancake breakfast upon arrival in Big Valley. Both steamers were decked out in flags and colours to celebrate this special day and year. APST 41, with flags a flying and under full steam, was the sole motive power for Canada Day Special #2 excursion (3:15) to Big Valley. No. 41 is a 1920 Baldwin Consolidation 2-8-0 62 feet in length and weighing 244,000 pounds. The balance of the afternoon was spent at Big Valley enjoying the interesting historic displays, exhibits (yes even 'G' scale model train locomotives) and, of course, the impressive train station/museum. The day/evening was capped off with a barbequed steak and a cool 'Canadian'. Patriotic and memorial experience or what! Now bring on 2018! ' height='150' width='200' />
My choice, from a railfan perspective, is of course the CP Canada 150 Train lead by those pristine, iconic F units. Incorporated in 1861, Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was an integral part of confederation. As a physical link between east and west, the building of the CPR is one of the country's greatest feats of engineering. My choice of picture and the Smiths Falls location will remain entrenched in my memory bank for ever. I had the good fortune, along with 4 or 5 others, to be trackside at Lorne Street as the CP 150 train slowly reversed out of Matheson Yard down the side track a goodly distance before finding the cross-overs to gain access to the main and then throttle up to ease by us on the near track on its way to our nation's capital! Sunday in Ottawa was a proud and enjoyable day with many photo opportunities but none to compare with the sounds and sights earlier in the morning at Smiths Falls. (COGEMA) is a subsidiary of Canadian National Railway (CN)operating a dedicated railcar ferry service within Quebec between Matane and Baie-Comeau; additionally providing occasional railcar ferry service to isolated rail networks at the ports of Port Cartier, Sept-Iles and Harve-Saint-Pierre. It also operates industrial switching to rail customers in Baie-Comeau. COGEMA began operations in 1975 and operates the company's only railcar ferry, the MV Georges Alexandre Lebel (Montreal). COGEMA was sold by CN to Quebec Railway Corporation during February 1999 when QRC also purchased the Matane and Mont Joli Subdivisions. In November 2008, CN re-purchased these assets from QRC. However prior to the re-purchase, QRC 1819 and mate QRC 1851 are seen systematically unloading and reloading the Georges Alexandre Lebel railcar ferry, in preparation for its afternoon crossing of the St Lawrence River, using 5 buffer cars and customary caboose CG79507.
