LDSX 7224 with slug LDSX 269 exits Feeder Yard ( Feeder Rd E MP: 0.16) with the retired Dash 8 CN 2434 (part of the infamous July funeral train) and a large cut of tank cars for Verbio Diesel Canada. After servicing Verbio, CN 2434 would be delived to SLM Recycling, Welland joining several other retirees already spotted on the adjoining track, immediately outside of the SLM compound plus a BC unit on the inner track. Now with JLCX seemingly positioned in the back pasture, LDSX 7224 and 269 should take on regular duties along with the more experienced Alco 1859.

  1. What happened with the JLCX unit? I thought it was newer. Is it being sent back? RIP the CN unit. Great shot!

  2. Looks like the Dash 8′s are brought to SLM one at a time.

  3. Thanks Brad! I am not sure of JLCX 3502′s future albeit she has been idle for a few weeks and sitting last in the yard line even behind the resident caboose and box car. I continue to be impressed with the colour scheme and uniformity of GIO’s growing battery of locomotives, trucks and promotional items within Niagara and Tillsonburg. Right you are Steve and best time to catch a Dash 8 is Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday when two crews work.

  4. Agreed Glenn. I’m also impressed with most of the shortlines and the uniformity and upkeep of their paint schemes unlike a certain Class 1! ;)

  5. Glenn for the benefit of all, what’s trillium’s usual schedule of activites?

I believe St. Catharines is Tues/Thurs (sometimes it’s M/W/F when things are busier)

but what happens the other days? Are there set days for port colborne/etc?

Also what about Thorold and Welland Tubes? There’s a mobile crew for those that much I know.

  6. Yes, now that the Trenergy (Steelcon) order is complete, St Catharines tends to be serviced Tuesdays and Thursdays. From experience, it appears that Welland Tube with its mobile crew is serviced noonish Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Later in the day and when a crew is available, GIO / 108 complete the Southern Yard transfer and corresponding service. Wednesday is also a double crew day for GIO. I suspect that Verbio, Dain City and LAC, Port Colborne plus others receive service daily (M-F) and/or as needed, etc. GIO’s home base is on Phillips Road, Feeder Yard exits via Pietz Road and action begins at 7:00 a.m. (all unofficial)

  7. They are taken over the Dain bridge one at a time. The guys told me they took a bunch and left them west of the bridge on the main. Then moved them one at a time over to WR yard and then took them all to SLM at once.

Perhaps this one was a later consideration.

  8. That makes sense … one over the Dain bridge at a time. However, no not delivered to SLM at once. Several have been delivered as noted, only BC Rail 4607 inside the compound, CN 2434 on Aug 3rd as pictured and CN 2098 sometime thereafter albeit still sitting on the main between tank cars, etc.

  9. Where is WR yard?

  10. WR yard is right in the centre of Welland near the plaza with Shoppers and Timmy’s !

  11. The tracks at SLM usually only hold one or two units at a time.
They scrapped some CP SD40′s awhile back but only 1-2 at a time.

  12. Thank you – I should get a car control diagram out and study – chances are WR, WH etc is all spelled out there :)

  13. WR Yard is south of Ontario St and parallel to Deere St in Welland to be specific!

WH yard is over the canal bridge used by Trillium, right behind the radio station!

  14. I did a drive-by SLM on Thursday morning, the 2137 and 2098 were first up in the north end of the former service track separated by a tank. Two tracks with maybe four units each sitting back in the weed covered tracks on SLM/Atlas property next to four former TRRY units. I took a drive by WR Yard just tanks and hoppers. Looking south from Humberstone Road across the bridge toward VerBio I could see a former CN unit(s) in the distance. After lunch two more units and the two from the service track had been spotted at SLM/Atlas property. I missed that move.

  15. They set off the dash 8 at Verbio and went to Vesuvius within that timeframe.

  16. Thanks for the information I’ll check that location out.
