The west end of Strathearne Yard is a pretty easy place to shoot CN - the 1600 is here on a near daily basis. CP is a bit more of a challenge - they're almost always here exclusively in the mornings. So to find my favourite CP unit at the west end of the yard yesterday afternoon during a brief window of sun was quite the treat. Hat tip to the crew too: the best days with CP in Hamilton are when TE11 is in town (Saturdays).

There's only a little snow on the ground here in Burlington in early 1966 as an eastbound freight starts up the Halton sub behind CN GP9 4491 and RS18 3659. While these units haven't been repainted, the new image is now starting to show up on some cars in the consist and many locomotives.

A Christmas visit back to Nova Scotia let me get out and shoot some of the weekday-only action that I rarely shot when I lived there. The main goal was the gypsum trains that ran between the quarry at Milford and the shipping pier at Wright's Cove. In 1987 you could chase and intercept the train a couple times in the 30-some miles between the quarry and Wright's Cove, not too likely you could do that today.

Here's the loaded train with the typical locomotive consist of a pair of big MLWs trailing about 50 cars and van rolling between Elmsdale and Endfield.

These three grimy rent-a-wreck's are on the point of a Carlton Trail Railway "eastbound" eventually bound for Meadow Lake SK. Speers was where the right of way changed owners, The train in this shot is still on CN's Blaine Lake Sub but in less than a train length will be on Carlton Trail's Blaine Lake Sub. Sadly all of this track has since been torn up, this was the second last train I ever shot on this line.

A lucky break in the clouds illuminates ONR 1802 as it passes a meadow of wildflowers alongside Aspdin Road at the CN Newmarket Sub Mile 144 marker. Northlander train service is scheduled to be discontinued on September 28, 2012.

Kids heading down the hill toward fishing wait as a pair of GEXR geeps give 'er with all their might to climb the 2.8 percent grade up the hill to the Goderich station from the Compass Minerals salt mine (far background). With 14 loads on the drawbar, it was a bit of a struggle, but no match for this 5000 horsepower pair which sounded amazing climbing the hill. Not many GP40's left on G&W around here and I'm surprised this one has survived as long as it has, most have been traded in. Compare to <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=28848 target=_blank> Arnold's shot from a bit down the hill</a> which is now overgrown, at least you can still get the CP Goderich sub in the photo from the HWY 21 overpass. No place to park though, beware.

A pair of ex-CP Red Barns (CMQ 9020 & CMQ 9023, same numbers on CP) are teamed with CITX 3091 (originally SD40 CP 5552) as the condcutor throws a switch before the power heads back into Farnham Yard. At right is M636 CP 4723, slated to be scrapped in the near future.
