Here is proof of a CN SD40 pulling the Northlander. I can't exactly remember the date (I never took notes and the envelopes the film is in is rarely dated) but it was definitely a cold night, as evident from the diesel exhaust vaporizing from the ONR APU behind the 5222. As soon as the SD40 starts loading, it too will give off vapour like an old steam engine.

At the station again. Seemed to be a favourite place of mine, probably cause everything was so accessible and there. The ONR used the Northlander a lot to shuffle power around between North Bay and Cochrane and vice-versa. This day (date escapes me, but it is definitely fall) we find FP7Au 2000 sitting in the siding. Unusual as it is still sitting there in the afternoon, but luckily it is facing (time table South) Southwest for slightly better lighting.

1802 and sister 1804 wait in the siding at the ONR North Bay station. The crew will soon pull the train off the siding, then back it down the main to the station to board passengers for a 2335 departure. The train south of North Bay wasn't operating that night.

Stopped in the siding at Kukatush, waiting for an eastbound. Notice on the left side below the ditchlight: That green stuff is granulated automotive glass. This train was involved in a (non fatal) grade crossing accident south of Brechin East. There was a bunch of glass and tail lights stuck between the plow and pilot as well.

The ghostly movements of engineers D. Wood and W. Sykes are caught on a long exposure as they figure out the easiest way to take off a dangling MU cable from the nose of the 2002. Neither a safe nor easy task. Of note: Both these men have recently retired after long careers with the ONR. They also had the honour of running the last southbound Northlander (698) into Toronto on September 28, 2012.

Having just brought 697 north from Toronto, the 2002 will become the Northlander's trailing unit as 2000 is prepped to move off the siding and then onto the nose of 2002. A regular occurrence when this train was on this schedule, a crew would bring a unit from the shop (it was needed up north) and leave it in the siding for the evening train which was due in at 2315 and departed at 2335. Enough time for a quick brake test and splash of fuel. Winter time was another story, though. Date is approximate.

Pinned at 40MPH (track speed) CP 8621 keeps the large-at-the-time 108 rolling through one of the nicest sections (it was all nice) of the North Bay Sub. This is now abandoned, unfortunately. Of note, our tail end would have been around a place called Adelard. Adelard was where #1 and #2 were scheduled to meet back in the day. An interesting and easy track setup that is a little too hard to explain on here.

Constantly cycled among ONR's 1800 and 2000 series units, these Blomberg 'B' trucks sit upturned on the floor of the wheel shop. They are waiting for shop staff to get back at things the next morning.

Christmas Eve 2005 finds whatever CP power the OVR had in its possession within or around North Bay tied up for the night in the OVR North Bay yard. There were at least 12 units all idling away. A railroader knew they were in downtown North Bay just by the smell of the diesel fumes hanging around, especially in the winter. Over the last few years that has changed, with the "Bay" being a shadow of its former self, as far as railways are concerned. (Note the skull and crossbones on the plow of the 1037)

Conductor Rose and Engineman O'Driscoll hop on the head end of 431's power to get it fired up and ready for a westbound run. They'll switch out a few tracks and make a lift, brake test it, then double on to their train on the Center Lead. They will be moving after dark. (Can't remember the exact date)

TEC train holds the main for a CP stacker at the east switch Levack. Dynamic brake was cut out, and the automatic brake locked the wheels anything beyond a minimum service on the evaluating car, which the folks back there didn't want. Needles to say, my hogger was not in a good mood. Later on that trip we encountered a small washout in the siding at Stinson. Nothing serious, but there was a big hole undermined underneath about 4 or 5 ties.
