They are passing by the “coming soon to Downtown” 45 Railroad st Apartments/Condos which are currently being built directly across from the station (as seen in this photo) and by the time this projects all finished we will have 2 ‘twin-like’ looking towers rising 25 & 27 stories in the air out from the original very old beige-coloured Downtown Building at 45 Railroad which was at one point home to ‘The Little Train Shoppe’ which sadly ended up having to permanently close down in the late 2000s as that’s when the building was sold to the developer who is currently working on the apartments now. This was the last day the CANDO short line rail company would operate this line because earlier that year they announced to the public that for ‘personal company reasons’ they just simply choose they no longer wished to operate the OBRY and a couple months prior to this day the Trillium Rail company took over all freight operations on this 36mile short line and as of early 2021, continue to move freight from Mississauga to Orangeville twice a week.
Unfortunately though, presently the operations along this 36 mile short line are said to cease entirely by Dec 31 2021 due to financial matters with the Orangeville Township but from a recent newspoint only this past January, apparently a Municipal Transit Company who puts electric buses on rails to help people commute (kind of like a LRT) has shown a bit of interest in purchasing this line from Orangeville thinking that if they could have their rail buses service Mississauga, Brampton and then eventually Orangeville, it’ll eventually earn them some good profit and also benefit the Orangeville town well in the long run, but that was only just a thought, still way too early to raise our hopes, best thing anyone can do now is just take things one day at a time and make sure we get our shots because almost everyone would agree that the ‘always better safe than sorry’ route is always the best way to go!' height='150' width='200' />
Trains final destination is Winnipeg Manitoba and the power on today’s train was a treat also. Behind the ordinary ac4400s finds a somewhat rare CP gp38-2 (for a manifest freight) followed by a even rarer sd60 numbered 6243 in bright red Canadian Pacific Paint. Crossing you can slightly see at the right is 12th Line Road and we are just south of New Tecumseth.
And yes, the black Suberu parked at the side of the crossing, right in front of the rare sd60 belongs to me. Hehe, only safe place I could really park at this location. Which is a good thing, safety should always come first. Try to remember that please (to everyone who is reading).' height='150' width='200' />
Train is about to cross Mayfield road and if you look towards the end of the covered hoppers on the right you can slightly spot the Snelgrove siding/run-around track which is still used fairly often up to this day by the Trillium Railway (company which operates this short line today).

This was the last regular freight train here under CANDO because early in 2018, the CANDO rail company announced to the public that they made the buisness decision to permanently discontinue operations along the 36 mile Owensound Spur for personal company reasons and set June 30 2018 to be their last day of operations here. Word went around Ontario fast and many of us railfans wondered often about the fate of this short line at that time as as it was honestly quite possible for the 36 mile line to fall completely dormant after June 30th depending on how eager the Township of Orangeville was in terms of finding a new Short Line Operator to keep their railway active but lucky for us, they managed to connect with Trillium Railway in May 2018 and to this present day their mp15ac numbered 333 in Blue GATX paint still operates twice a week (mostly Tuesday’s and Fridays still) moving freight from the CPR Galt Sub in Mississauga, 36 miles north to the Township of Orangeville Ontario to service the last 6 customers along the 36miles left of the CPR Owensound Spur who rely of rail: 4 of which are in Orangeville and 2 more in Brampton.
* One last Fun fact, from what I’ve heard from locomotive engineer ‘Steve Bradley’ myself, back when he began OBRY operations in 2000 it was still only these exact 6 buisness’s who were using the rail back then. Havnt lost a single customer so far in just about 20 years (but excluding the Brampton Brick Place who Steve himself said he only serviced once very early in his era as by 2000 they had already found that using containers were the most efficient way for them with regards to shipping their bricks across the country by rail, their spur’s switch had been taken out by 2003).' height='150' width='200' />
CN L559 is shown reversing across the busy 5 lane Torbram Road crossing right near Steels Ave as they push today’s freight from MacMillian Yard up to the Buisness Park to service the customers. Powering today’s train was actually a pair of leased blue GATX geeps and if you look at the stripes right above the trucks just before the blue paint, you can notice that the lead unit 2163 actually has a yellow stripe going across like most ordinary CN geeps while the second unit 2289 still has a ordinary white one like most GATXs. Wonder what CNs long-term plan is to do with these GATXs in terms of potentially repainting them into red and white CN or keeping them the way they are and returning them to their original owner when the lease expires? Guess only time will tell, only time will tell.' height='150' width='200' />
I had just turned 11 years old at this time and this photo was taken by my dad. Train happened to be GEXR 431 heading home westbound after it’s daily run to MacMillian Yard to interchange freight with CN and the lead unit was FEC 709 which was leased to GEXR from the Florida East Coast for just a little more than 2 years and during that time it very often found on trains 432/431. I was video recording the train as well with my good old Flipvideo Camcorder on my tripod and my fingers were ever so slightly over my ears as this was still a couple months before the older Brampton Diamond got replaced with the quieter type- where only trains traveling along the lesser used Owen Sub rode up and over the rails causing just a slight booming noise since Owen Sub trains are restricted to go no more than 10mph through the Downtown bit of Brampton and big heavy freights traveling fast along the Halton stayed on their own seemless rails. The noise the speeding trains along the Halton made while crossing the diamond before it got replaced was just ‘a little’ sensitive to my ears at first during this time but wasn’t too hard to get used to after the big heavy engines went by. I always sort of missed the welcoming boom-boom as well ever since the new diamond went in but at least I got the memories to hand on to! This also happens to be my 100th image up here on Railpictures.ca! ' height='150' width='200' />
This also happened to be the morning the clocks sprang ahead by an hour so even though I may have lost an hour of sleep, the extra hour of sunlight on this fine Sunday afternoon in March totally made up for it as the stars were able to align ever so perfectly for me to grab this nicely light northbound photo just before the sun began to set and from there it was time for me to call it a day and head home for dinner.
