I thought I'd post this frame as it's finally been confirmed that BNSF 2098 (now CN 4957) has been repainted into CN colours after being purchased a year or so ago by CN following a lengthy stay on horsepower hours. Here it is while under assignment to Brantford back in June 2023, taking the lead of L581 as they begin heading back home after working some industries on the glass lead in Milton; a task normally completed by L551.

The sun was just setting over the horizon and due to the cloud cover in the area it illuminated the sky above in a mixture of pink & purple, to this day I'm not sure I can recall such a dramatic scene while trackside and I feel it really gives this shot an extra punch.

The 2098 as well as a decent bunch of other BNSF geeps were lent to CN by BNSF for the supposed reasoning of repaying horsepower hours back around the springtime of 2023. Normally horsepower hours are repaid between the class 1s with standard road power, but CN being desperate for 4-axles since the retirement of the GMD-1s as well as the GP9s getting older and weaker lead to them doing this unconventional method. It appears that most units BNSF lent were serviceable engines that would otherwise be in storage due to a surplus of 4-axle power within their own network, so eventually CN was able to purchase most of the engines they were currently "borrowing". As of 2025, some are still roaming around with their BNSF identities fully intact, some have been patched out, and others sent to shops for overhauls and repaints, which was unfortunately the case with the 2098. Initially I was hoping for a patch job that would leave the stripes on the nose intact, but no such luck.

With that being said, hopefully you enjoy what was probably the best shot I managed of this guy before it's makeover. ' height='150' width='200' />
Above, CP 421 has a trio of engines up front as it heads west through Rosedale/Summerhill on a nice July afternoon.

Aside from the signals being changed from an interlocking to a pair of intermediates in the early 80s as well as the service track on the south side being removed, the location hasn't changed all that much in the 40+ years that separates the two images. Unfortunately, fast forwarding to the present day will open up a big change, as in April 2024 the signal bridge (along with every other searchlight on the North Toronto) was torn down. I'm glad to have documented it while I had time, and very grateful for those who were doing it in the decades before me. ' height='150' width='200' />
On most days, 101 would pass around 5pm and the NT would sit vacant of any westbounds until dusk or after dark when H17 would make an appearance around 9 or later. A common theme for myself was watching the monitor like a hawk to see if something got lined out of Agincourt behind 101, as almost always it would end up being something cool / unusual, like this train seen above here. Former SOO SD60 no. 6236 takes the solo lead of a 2-H88 with a healthy cut of traffic for Wolverton & London behind them, mostly consisting of empty auto racks. Above you'll see how I wrote in past-tense almost as if the line has been abandoned or something, which is admittedly not the case. But with every searchlight removed over the course of a couple days last month and shots like the one above no longer possible, the attraction & charm of the North Toronto Sub is undoubtedly diminished, if not eliminated entirely depending on who you ask. With all that being said, I'm appreciative of the opportunities I had to shoot these classic relics, especially with unusual movements like this one. Thanks for all the memories Bartlett Ave, I could write a whole other paragraph about the time spent at this spot alone, but I'll save that for a later date. Thanks for reading.' height='150' width='200' />
