I’ve taken a liking to these, as they remind me of the ‘Blue Devils’ which are all retired now. On the rare occasion that one is assigned trailing on 435 the day before, there’s a pretty good chance it will lead the local 509 the next day. Here it is seen bringing 509 towards London yard at Adelaide Street on the Dundas Sub.

I and many others thought for sure that this unit would have been wyed in Windsor or Detroit for the return trip east - but somehow, it emerged out of Walkerville Junction just after 6 AM in the lead position of (at the time) 134. This was a good day to not sleep in. This was one of two mainline SD40-2 leaders in the year for London and the surrounding area. It was great getting to see everyone out and about for this one.

SD70ACe 8102 was the original leader, however it faced PTC issues while the train was stateside. CN 3031 was added on later, and eventually the 2517 (not PTC equipped) was tacked on in Sarnia. This was a unique scenario, and seeing a Canadian cab leading 148 is certainly uncommon.

The train is heading under one of the several signal gantries still standing in London, all original and still holding the vintage searchlight signals. I have always taken the opportunity to incorporate these artifacts into my shots when possible. ' height='150' width='200' />
This spot has always proved to have nice vantage points for the CN line, as well as the CP Windsor Subdivision a few hundred feet to the north. The telephone poles that still stand here are a welcome sight, as they've been torn down elsewhere along the line in recent years.
<br>
Leading is VIA 909, built in November of 2001. The "love the way" wrap that was applied in 2020 is already starting to show wear, as the original renaissance paint can be seen underneath in places. However, the yellow certainly stands out and makes for a nice burst of color in the winter wonderland that it was that day. The general consensus among railfans is that these P42DC locomotives will be the first to get retired once the new Siemens trainsets are fully pressed into service.
