Scheduled to depart Guelph at 0740h, Canadian Pacific P1 Mikado 5187 leads train 342 away from the Royal City's CPR station on Eramosa Road, passing beneath the Heffernan Street foot bridge. The train will be making the first of its twice daily - except Sunday - round trips between Guelph and Guelph Junction with flag stops at <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=42874>Speedwell</a> (0750h), Arkell (0754h), Corwhin (0800h), Moffat (0805h) and finally the junction at 0815h. Before the month is out, the dedicated passenger train will make its last run on October 25, 1958 before being replaced by a mixed train the following day.<br><br>The consist seen above utilizing a locomotive and combine held down this short 15.2 mile assignment for only one timetable period from April 27, 1958 through October 25, 1958. Prior to this the assignment was handled by battery car <a href=https://scontent-yyz1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/271554924_6834512539956546_1778663850368257113_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=730e14&_nc_ohc=2nGpg66gChQAX_2kDFZ&_nc_ht=scontent-yyz1-1.xx&oh=00_AfDEiesTNlOQcmp2NUzpvksDUtyLbUQElzaWiyfb64DWLQ&oe=639F76B9>CPR 9002,</a> known locally as "Old Sparky," and later by gas-electric car <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46944>CPR 9004.</a> During this time there were six round trips daily except Sunday between Guelph and Guelph Junction. <br><br>It should be noted a daily Hamilton - Goderich and return train operated until April 24, 1955 when Hamilton - Guelph Junction service ceased. The following day, a mixed train was introduced operating daily except Sunday between Guelph and Goderich with the "shuttle" service provided between Guelph and Guelph Junction. The mixed between Guelph and the junction would cease circa 1960, leaving the Guelph - Goderich mixed train isolated, likely contributing to its demise on <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=48878>August 4, 1962.</a><br><br>Originally <a href=https://guelph.pastperfectonline.com/photo/1BF60656-7263-49C2-B6EE-989487283250#gallery>constructed in 1881,</a> the Heffernan Street bridge was built to provide pedestrian access to the the downtown core from the east side of the Speed River. By 1887 this required pedestrians to cross the Guelph Junction Railway line, and shortly after the CPR yard, resulting in the bridge being removed for safety reasons during the early 1900s. The City of Guelph planned to build the structure seen here to cross both the river and the CPR yard, and <a href=https://guelph.pastperfectonline.com/Photo/A64FEEAA-20B1-46CC-863B-812520875085#gallery>construction was completed</a> in 1914. Unique to Guelph, it has been a vantage point for <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=11276>many photographers.</a><br><br>Guelph's 1911 CPR station can be seen beyond the train. It would be <a href=https://wcma.pastperfectonline.com/archive/39CD8029-C1BA-4B4C-B9D8-442028225214#gallery-11>dismantled piece by piece in 1983</a> for reconstruction in the south end of Cambridge. Unfortunately, the project ran out of funding with only the foundation built (still there to this day) and some materials sold into private ownership. The bricks and floor joists would be used as part of a residence in Blandford-Blenheim Township.<br><br>Just past the combine, the end of the Eramosa Road bridge can be seen, which <a href=https://guelph.pastperfectonline.com/photo/CF6CD921-E42D-4562-BFEA-168594643900#gallery>collapsed during replacement</a> in June 1964, fatally injuring a worker. Interestingly, the bridge included crossing protection mounted on <a href=https://guelph.pastperfectonline.com/photo/EEA3144C-E889-4812-A184-851048767120#gallery>both ends of the bridge.</a><br><br><i>Original Photographer Unknown, Al Chione Duplicate, Jacob Patterson Collection Slide.</i>

CN Van 79846 with GP9 4590 on the point just dropped a long string of CN flat cars and Sante Fe Coal hoppers in the once bustling Macey Yard. The Van was built in the CN Pointe St. Charles shops in 1976/77. A much reduced trackage Macey Yard still exists on the West side of Port Colborne and is generally used by Trillium for Winter storage of covered grain hoppers to supply ADM when the Great Lakes shipping is closed and rail becomes needed for February to March.

Well this was an interesting meet to see. Though it looks like the two trains will converge in the intersection, they are actually both eastbound. SOR is shoving, while CP is pulling ahead. Crews from both trains readying to throw switches. CP is presumably going to pull across Ottawa Street and shove back west to work the interchange. If you're going to get a CN-CP meet in industrial Hamilton, this is a pretty likely spot. I saw SOR and CP meet here a couple of times, and came within seconds of a meet shot with CN and CP earlier this month. <br><br>Funnily enough, the arrival of the second train was evidently enough for the driver of the black car, pictured turning around to find an alternate route.

TTC PCC 4599 operates on a fantrip, making the turn from southbound on Church Street to westbound on Wellington. In the background, another TTC PCC can be seen heading eastbound on King Street. The downtown skyline in this part of town was a little less impressive back then than it is today. 4599 was part of a 52-car group of PCC's acquired secondhand from the Cincinnati Street Railway in 1950. Half were pre-war "air-operated" PCC's built by St. Louis Car in 1939/40, classified as TTC "A10" cars 4575-4601, and the other half were the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37799><b>A9 "all-electric" cars</b></a> 4550-4574 built in 1947). They operated in Toronto for nearly two decades until most of the A10's were included in part of a group of 100 Toronto PCC's sold to Egypt in 1968 (rendered surplus due to the opening of the Bloor-Danforth subway extensions, that replaced the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=31201><b>Bloor and Danforth "shuttle" runs)</b></a>. Six of the remaining A10's were sold to Tampico, Mexico in 1971/72, including car 4599.<br><br>The Church/Wellington/Front intersection was at the south end of the old Church streetcar route (they used to loop Front-Scott-Wellington), which ran all the way up to Bloor ending at Asquith Loop. Regular streetcar service had ended in May 1954 (replaced by buses), but the tracks along the southern part of Church between College & Wellington were retained for short-turns and diversions, and remain in use for that purpose to this day.<br><br>Mid-century modern bank building at the north-west corner of Church & Wellington has served home to a Toronto Dominion Bank, a Pizza Pizza, and is currently a burger bistro.<br><br><i>Foster Morrison photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide</i>.

CP C424 4204 is shown still in her as-delivered maroon & grey script livery at the Quebec St. yard in London in September 1972. A replacement horn in the current action red paint is a sign that her days in the old script livery are numbered. 4204 was also one of the few units originally delivered with high-mounted headlights (4200-4209) that later had them lowered to the nose. <br><br> After retirement in the 90's, CP 4204 was sold to the Ottawa Central Railway, and today survives stored on the Morristown & Erie.

The early bird gets the worm, so the old story goes! On this day that was definitely the case. I arrived at Bayview at 0655, which was a little later than I had planned but still early enough on this day. I soon learned that #384 was stopped on the hill in emergency and was setting up retainers before proceeding. Fifteen minutes later he came flying around the corner onto the Oakville Sub. That was the only eastbound around until #670 arrived and by then the clouds had rolled in. It definitely paid to get up with the sun!

A bad day for trains and a slide from Ron Tuff. Ron's slide is dated August 5, 1978 and shows the location as Lake Ave. Stoney Creek. I was sent a link to A.W. Mooney image posted of this wreck and he shows it at mile 37.6 Grimsby sub.. Also AW Mooney indicates that this was CN train 387 and it encountered a track switch that had been tampered with by some vandals. Quite a derailment ensued involving four locomotives and numerous rail cars. Thank you Mr. Mooney for the information on your image. I have not been able to find out how the engine crew fared in this derailment. Hopefully all survived and it must of been one heck of a ride.

Things are pretty quiet in this part of the world at 0630 on a Saturday morning. So quiet in fact that I could hear the rumbling of this train for what felt like ages before it finally ended up in my viewfinder. Breaking the deathly silence of rural Niagara Region on a peaceful Saturday morning was CP 143, with CP 8893 and CEFX 1055 on point. <br><br>This is a spot that has interested me for a while. Pictured here at CN Robbins, CP 143 is about to come off the connecting track from the Hamilton Sub and enter the CN Stamford Sub. This connecting track is the old CN Cayuga Sub, which makes it all the better. The Cayuga Sub formerly ran through my hometown of Simcoe, so any way, shape, or form it holds onto life elsewhere is good in my books. I shot <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37536">a 143 not too far from here</a> (a little to the east up on Wilhelm Road) back in February, while its head end was fully on the Stamford and tail end still coming off the connecting track.

Formerly on static display at Prince Albert Exhibition Grounds MLW 4-6-2 CN 5080 is now at Aspen Crossing railroad. The plan is to restore the loco to operational order, talk around the patch is the million dollars is in the bank, I hope the owner realizes it will take a lot more than that!

An unusually early CN L584 lifts loaded frames from Formet Industries Inc. and will soon head west to the Talbot Sub wye to London (normally heads west under darkness). Unfortunately for me a GMTX pair was used for this move rather than IC 9571 and CN 4796 also assigned to London currently

OSR's matched F units have just finished switching Cami and are headed to Woodstock. After arriving in Ingersoll 10min prior on a day calling for heavy storms and not knowing whether the Woodstock Job was running, I could not have timed it better

Two sets of Union Pacific 1600-series Alco FA1/FB1 units are shown parked at CP's Lambton Yard engine terminal in March of 1964. Rather than reactivate some of their stored steam engines, in the early 60's power-short CP opted to lease surplus power from other railroads instead. Rumour has it UP pulled their FA/FB units from the deadlines to lease to CP in 1963/1964, and they mostly ran in solid UP sets. The units were built in the late 40's and after years of use on the UP were at the end of their lifespans. Upon return to the UP, they were used as trade-in credit to EMD the next year, and ultimately all scrapped.
