About awmooney
Retired early due to health problems after 42 years in grocery business; started watching trains in the early 70s and took up photography in 1974 in Niagara, and of course Bayview Jct.. Graduated to a half decent camera a year later; the D&H is my favourite road (by far) but have done a fair amount of photography in Canada. As far as cameras go, suffered thru endless problems with the old Miranda series after ditching the Kodak 110 when I found I really was interested in this hobby and it wasn't just a passing fancy. Used Pentax series for a number of years before going to Mamiya 645 Mediums as well as a variety of old 4x5 Speed Graphics. Currently still shoot film with the 645s and an RB. Digital? Someday, maybe. Home is Grimsby, Ontario. Railpictures.ca is the first Site I have contributed to.

![Going thru old slides, I came across this one. I honestly do not remember taking it. It appears I was driving southward along the parkway and saw that I had missed CP going over the old Michigan Central bridge. And, holy (bleep!) here comes CN !!!! It looks as though I jumped out and ran to get a shot, and if I have a follow-up image I haven't found it.
But the scoop is, a train on each bridge at the same time!!! The CP was probably a regular but the CN only happened due to work on the International Bridge in Fort Erie and this pair of 5400s was a resulting detour train.
All I know as I was down in the Falls as often as I had time to as the rail traffic on the Whirlpool was a rare thing, save for the odd local and the AMTK.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/CN-CP-NF-03-03-1993-200x150.jpg)

![Warm and windy late afternoon at Burlington West, I'm hanging out around the dinner hour as it was a busy time for VIA. Here we see VIA 6773 barreling thru at a good clip heading west. Note the yard in behind the station is unusually quiet. CP and CN both serviced this yard, and they had departed for the day.
Track on left is the western end of the Halton Sub. Freight only.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/VIA-6773Burlington-West-7-1982-200x150.jpg)

![I am in his picture and he is in mine. However, I have no idea who the guy up on the hill is. Nor the other one off to the left. You can tell this image is from many years back. There is a couple sitting back enjoying the evening news. Sometimes I think I am the only one who buys a paper any more.
Anyway, I am on the south side of the tracks and a rolling meet between CN 5590 eastbound and the evening GO 705 heading for Hamilton was nice to see.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Bayview-Meet-Aug-8-1979-200x150.jpg)

![Out of the series of ALCO C-630 locomotives that once graced the Cartier Mining Co roster; this was the last survivor. The original series of #30-39 were all former UP locomotives, retired in 1990, and according to the CTG this one might have been the former UP 2907. A perfect sunshine shot near the Port Cartier diesel shop back in ALCO glory days, this being early summer 1981.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Cartier-34-200x150.jpg)

![Fifty years has gone by since I snapped this photo of a few slumbering TH&B locomotives in what was a rather idyllic setting. Hard to believe this was a busy railroad in the western reaches of Hamilton.

![This image is just for the Station fans. Here is a summary regarding a station that went against (and survived) the usual fate of stations operated by the CP, a company known for its ruthless destruction of outdated structures all over the country since the late 1970s.
Fernie station was opened in 1909 and operated until 1964 when the last passenger train left town. The station eventually was donated to the city in 1979. In 1987, renovations started and a rather energetic effort had it finished and reopened in 1990. It featured all new but historically accurate windows. Because it had to be moved back from the tracks it also sits on a new solid concrete foundation.
It surfaced as a Community Arts and Crafts Centre. And did well. The old baggage & freight area now supports live music and theatre. The ticket office area became a restaurant. Out front the platform is now a nice deck for train watching, and of course, having a few drinks.
Fernie prides itself in being a popular tourist stop and the station blends right in.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/CP-sta-Fernie-BC-09-25-2021-200x150.jpg)

![Well, Geez !!!! About as rare as a Baldwin at Bayview..........I'm over on the south side at the Junction awaiting the passenger train and all of a sudden these two female railfans came running over. Not to pass this up, I quickly switched from my 35MM lens to a 28 for a sneak shot. After the train passed, off they went and I never heard of them again.
The eastbound? Oh I did write 3121 on my slide, I guess that must be a GP9 trailing, but who cares? Had to keep my priorities in order.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Bayview-fans-October-1978-200x150.jpg)

![The daily NS Talbotville Ont to Buffalo NY auto parts train ceased to operate some years ago. Its a shame, as it was a huge fan favourite. There seemed to be no end to the locomotive combinations that could appear on this train. An example is this view of UP 4896 and CSX 8973 powering the eastbound on a pleasantly warm May morning. On the right is the very last of its' kind in Niagara; a free standing building that was used for fresh fruit storage. The siding has been pulled up and the building is soon to be demolished. At one time every community along the line here had a facility like this, and in season a wayfreight would stop and load up perishables to ship to Toronto.
Its all a memory now. The business has been lost to the trucks.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/UP-4896-328-Louth-Ont-200x150.jpg)

![Dull day, decent train. Actually, something like this was a common sight back in the very early days of VIA.
It is hot, really muggy, but I'm glad I hung in at the Junction for a few of these trains when I had the chance.
CN 6536 on the lead, but unfortunately I did not record the B unit.
The far right track was for helpers engines during the steam era for assistance on the long Dundas grade. On the left of the lead unit, note the well worn path up the hillside. Railfan path, of course.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/CN-6536-Bayview-July-1978-200x150.jpg)

![For me it was rather fortunate to have the hazy sky that prevailed on this day. The shadows of the westbound morning #393 as a result were much less harsh. And a nice power combination. CN 2106, 2025 and 2316 seen here passing the Woodstock VIA station. The leader, a BBD HR616 was one of a model that was quite unreliable, and most of them barely lasted 15 years, whereas the MLW C-630M and M-636 which followed lived out a long life, and delighted the fans...much more so than those who operated them. All units off the roster by 1998.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Woodstock-Ont-CN-2106-393-wb-Apr-22-1992-200x150.jpg)

![It is the early years of VIA, as one can see by the blue/yellow baggage car behind CN 6773. This train was recorded as it came up to Bayview Jct on it's eastward journey. Looking at the sun angle I am wondering if this the old afternoon #74. According to the CTG this locomotive now resides in Williams, AZ, home of the Grand Canyon train. Nice to know it lives on.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CN-6773-east-Bayview-9-5-79-200x150.jpg)

![At the west end of the sprawling Quebec St yard in London is a westbound train with CEFX 1007 and 1003 as power. During this time a number of "Bluebirds" were on lease to CP and it was nice to be able to catch a pair of them on the head end. In the background is the old Military T-building, which I understand went up for sale last year, having outlived its necessity.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CEFX-London-1007-1003-8-21-04-200x150.jpg)

![Light dusting of snow, but a rather cold morning. Here we see CN #333 with CN 9663, 2414 and 5082 heading eastward toward Niagara Falls. The beautiful Grimsby station was now home to the RailHouse restaurant which came into being after the Grimsby Depot concept, which was a few businesses and restaurant operating out of some rolling stock west of the station, failed due to lack of customer base. The station itself would perish in an electrical fire on the last day of 1994. Not at all knowing I would relocate from St. Kitts to Grimsby some years later, I'm really glad I took the time to photograph this most picturesque location while it lasted.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Grimsby-CN-333-CN-9663-2414-5082-12-8-92-200x150.jpg)

![A typical dull winter-grey sky on the morning of March 14, 1992 and I went down to Jordan to catch AMTK #97. Nice to see it #198, the former GO Transit #506, one of 8 GO GP40TC locomotives sold to Amtrak in 1988. Here, it still looks rather spiffy in its new paint. All eight (192-199) were rebuilt to GP38H-3 by the NS in 2005. I don't remember when the track and switch on the right was removed, but I do recall a small yard here at one time as Jordan was once a very busy location for fresh fruit shipping.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Jordan-Ont.-AMTK-198-97-Mar-14-1992-200x150.jpg)

My car is parked on where once was the location of the Puslinch station, many years removed. Nice variety of power, now gone from the roster. CP SD40 5527 ended up on the Indiana Northeastern and the trailing MLWs are retired.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CP-5527-eb-504-Puslinch-Ont.-200x150.jpg)

![For a while in the early months of 1993, the International Railroad Bridge in Fort Erie was closed to traffic as sinking stone piers were shored up. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge at Niagara Falls was the place to be as most all traffic was diverted thru CN and the Grimsby sub.
In this image we see NS 8569 and 8079 having just crossed into Canada. That's the big Niagara Falls VIA station looming over the scene.
Normal traffic at the time was limited to Amtrak, VIA and small CN transfers, so the sudden influx of mainline freights was quite the experience for the fans.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/NS-8569-8079-200x150.jpg)

Bit of a surprise, CN 8941 with the Evaluation Budd in tow. First time I have seen this car not under its' own power.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/DSC_1041-200x150.jpg)

![It is one of those damp snowy sloppy days at the old Burlington West (Freeman) station. Eastbound VIA 6762 is making a stop. I am wondering if this is the mid-morning #84. These days the area is now barren, as the station was moved over to Fairview Av., preserved as a museum. The opening of the large GO facility just to the east made the Burlington West station redundant.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/VIA-6762-Burlington-West-200x150.jpg)

![In the village of Blyth there is an old railroad station which seems like it is in the middle of nowhere as far as stations go. It is. The last train ran on the old London, Huron & Bruce Railroad back in April of 1941. The trains used to operate from London thru Clinton, Blyth to Wingham. From the day I shot this image, the line had been 40 years gone, and the track and most all reminders that there had actually been a railroad thru here had pretty much vanished.
Citizens of Blyth so loved the little station that they purchased it for nostalgic reasons. It sat empty for many years but now, in 1981, it has became a residence, and still is to this day.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/CN-Sta-Blyth-Ont-200x150.jpg)
