About Todd Steinman


I have always loved railfanning. From the age of three - my parents swore I knew where every railway line, railway crossing, or any station was. I was born in Palmerston, Ontario - right beside the old station and rail yard. Although I missed the days of steam, I grew up at the end of what I call the dark period of the railways. Stations were painted in drab, dreary colors - dark colors were also found on locomotive power,etc. However, it does bring me joy in viewing other photos online and remembering how great it was to railfan - especially when I was a kid!I am also happy to share my photos....although my main focus has been of the structures that the railroad companies seem to ignore these days, depsite designation of some. Please enjoy.

The ex-CNR station at Lakefield. Semi-restored, and retains it's original features, including the nameboard over the telegrapher's / station agents bay. Nothing like faded paint and red insulbrick, plus a little rustic board and batten siding to give you a feeling of nostalgia of what once was. <br> <br> Anyone know if this has been fully restored yet, as well as still housing a bookshop?

On a very miserable, yet warm but foggy November day, I visited the Stratford station. To my luck, I actually saw two GEXR trains this day. However, being more into railway stations back then, I did not get a lot of decent photos of the trains. However, out of the select few, I am submitting the first of two.....(note the engineer and conductor look on as they get ready to depart Stratford, and in their tow is now OSR 1401 in full RailLink regatta as well as sister 1400, with 4001 in tow. <br> <br> Anybody have any information on 1400 or 4001?

On a weird day weather wise, standing at a private driveway crossing in the rain...CN 2262 leads the charge of auto racks westbound past the yellow 'Paris West' sign (just to the left of the locomotive).

The station at Washago - another one of those small community stations that has stood the test and change of times. To note...from four tracks down to one, the station is still used by crews only. VIA built a shelter of it's own sometime in the 90's, maybe earlier. And of course, the CTC signals. I'm sure these have been replaced by the more popular modern style. The old 'bridge' that housed the signals for all four tracks was still standing from my visit in 2008 (although quite rusty). And of the former roadbeds, some of it was filled in for an even walking surface for those boarding or disembarking the train at Washago...and the rest was taken over by weeds (as seen in the foreground, shadowing the Bala Sub.).

Finally, after a full day of railfanning, the engineer of OSR 162 gives us a 'cheers' for a job well done chasing his train through the country side, as it races through Beachville.

CN 8822 and two other units lead this eastbound freight across the overpass of Highway 2 in Paris. I would later chase this train to Copetown, where the real action was happening!

From a day that included railfanning with the great Arnold Mooney, to malfunctioning level crossing gates and signals on Ingersoll Avenue, OSR 1401 and 1620 had already arrived and been in Woodstock for about an hour, with it's cut of cars bound for Coakley. Here, the crew hand the orders up to the engineer.

I was lucky enough to see the Local in Woodstock at the end of June, while on a railfanning trip with Mr. AW Mooney himself. However, I did not the greatest of shots as it whisked through Woodstock. A couple of weeks later, and luck be shining on me as I just captured it as it departs Galt. Here a trio of units led by 3118 accelerates out of the yard, westbound for Woodstock.

In the years since this photo was taken, I have learned that you should always take as many photos as you can while visiting a certain area. This is especially true when it comes to any structure of the railway, and the old station that once stood at Hespeler is no exception. <br> <br> This was my first of only two shots of the station itself. This photo was taken in the spring of 2000, while I came back and visited again in the winter of 2002. Two shots, one photo from each end of the station. Shortly after my last visit in March 2002, word came that the station had caught fire, and burnt to the ground. By the time I made it there after that fire, the crews had already been in to cleanup, and nothing but the platform remained. <br> <br> Hespeler lost a piece of it's heritage that night the station burned down. I haven't been back there since, as there is nothing else worth photographing in that area. The line is still served by the Goderich & Exeter Railway. And it's just another fine example that you can never get too many photos of one train, structure, etc.

A former Raillink engine, still in it's previous owner's colors..pull a string of cars out of a siding at the old Stuart Street yard. The conductor is alongside the train, and will throw the switch once it has cleared.

<b> HOT, HAZY, HUMID...</b> and with the hammer down! As it passes me at the old station site, CN 5657 (and two other units) leads this mostly tank car revenue freight up the Niagara Escarpment accelerating as it continues to all points west.

The Canadian National station in Parry Sound. Through the years vegetation has encroached the Bala Subdivision, making it tougher to get a decent shot. However, you can see how beautifully restored the station is. VIA trains still call here, and the local Chamber of Commerce resides in the building too. And just after I captured this shot, CN 2669 came hustling through with a southbound freight bound for Vaughan.

In honour for all the classic shots that Mr. Mooney has provided to, as well as my first milestone here on rp.ca, here is my photo of the restored CP station now used as an Art Gallery. Note the ties, and somewhat remaining rails of what once was the yard. I wonder, from years gone by - if a young man with a brushcut who went by the name of Bobby Orr, ever boarded trains here?

Last week I headed to Nanticoke to try and get some photos of the 'local' switching cars at the Imperial Oil refinery. Not only did I walk away without a good photo of the train...but again, came away with another warning. After some photos I have seen on rp.ca recently, as well as remembering some risks I have taken to get the great shot, I came across this photo I took last fall. <br> <br> With a forlorn CN 4784 sitting lonely in a surprisingly near empty yard, heed to the signs fellow rp.ca photographers! Stay safe.

<b> WILD TIMES IN BRECHIN! </b> Upon my last visit, the former CP station hues a Wild Wings restaurant. Heavily altered, you can still make out where the right of way was. Also note the two boxcars, one being that of the CN...probably serving as refrigerators for all those wings. You can also make out the bay window, where the station agent's office would have been. <br> <br> Anyone know what subdivision this would have been for the Canadian Pacific? Also, rumour has it that the former CN Brechin East station still exists as a residence in the town. Any information would be helpful.

Upon my first visit to Cornwall in 2000, I wound up being greatly disappointed. Having seen the original stone station in books as a youngster, I was hoping to get my first shots of the stone structure that was built by the Grand Trunk. However, here, in it's place, was this flat roof structure that was in my opinion lacking in architectural detail. Imagine...upon my visit in 2000, asking the female VIA attendant the question "What happened to the station?". Unfortunately she was not as helpful to my question as I had hoped, but she was at least truthful. <br> Since then, I have learned some history as to why this station was built by CN. The current station was built in relation and relocation of the St. Lawrence Seaway project of the late 50's. The newer structures were built as replacements those older stone structures, and located further inland. Cornwall's was no different to those at Morrisburg, Iroquois, and Long Sault.
