![About a year or so ago (perhaps a little less than a year - exact timelines escape me) CN put Thorold Yard back into service for storage. Over this time it's largely been host a host to box cars, pellet cars, coil cars, and the pipe cars used by Welded Tube. To date, this had been one of 562's moves that had eluded me but fortunately was able to catch it before the sun disappeared behind a large cloud mass the other weekend. After moving some coils out of the way, they pulled some pellet cars out of the yard, which appeared to be for Oxy Vinyls down on the Chemical Spur.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/IMG_3871-200x150.jpg)

![A month after catching CP at MANA I found myself out on my lunch break today to see if I could find CN anywhere in the north end. Didn't take long to come across them westbound on the N&NW Spur, and with two coils and a string of gons on the head end, I figured they were headed for MANA and Stelco. Sure enough, they worked both. MANA can be a tough place to shoot, with a lot of flag poles, concrete barriers, switch stands, and even security vehicles (such as the one in the CP shot) getting in the way. But luckily, they worked a track that afforded a clean view. This track was added in the summer, after MANA did extensive work (performed by Allied if I recall correctly) adding track in their property. Note this shot from 2019, where this track is not present. You will also note in this 2021 shot, they are resting on a switch for more new track running to the east.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/IMG_3963-200x150.jpg)

![CP TH11 is pictured at MANA (former Stelco Rod Mill) in Hamilton, lifting a long string of gons out of the western most track into the building. CP was going to MANA quite a bit in December, and it was the first time I had seen them there in a couple of years. The traffic all for CSX I assume, given it was all CSX gons. I got CN here a month or so later - just one of the many industries in the north end of Hamilton visited by both.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/IMG_3491-200x150.jpg)

![The longest days of the year - and shooting a 143 at CN Robbins with north side light was my fain focus at the time. It's about two hours or so for 143 from Guelph Junction to CN Robbins (on most days, somehow the one with the CMQ barns took about four and a half), so anything 'late' enough to be at the junction around 4 a.m. or so this time of year is fair game for sunrise down in Niagara. And that's pretty much how most of my days started for a while - up early with a check of ATCS. On this Monday morning in June, this one evidently was in the right window around Campbellville so I hauled myself out of bed in Hamilton and ventured down to CN Robbins.

Watching the sun rise higher and shadows slowly disappearing, I was doing the same kind of calculations we all do: will the sun actually be high enough by the time they get here? The shadows from the trees at CN Robbins hadn't been overcome by the rising sun yet, and with 143 nearing Brookfield East to enter the CN Stamford Sub, I abandoned my aspirations for CN Robbins on this day and off to Fort Erie I went. Little did I know however that just five days later, I would pull off the shot at CN Robbins with the 143 heard 'round the world.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/IMG_8936-200x150.jpg)

![I had no real intentions of posting this any time soon, but following on mention of these ballast cars in Rob's 2003 shot of Fisher Yard, I will offer this view. They are sitting on what is the main of the Belt Line, and have been shoved a little further west now. As I mentioned in Rob's shot, I have seen these cars come and go, and asked one of the Kinnear guys who told me they have used them to add weight to the head end of 255's lift before, but don't really need to anymore because 255's lift consistently has AIM loads on it now.

For those who like the details- this was a Saturday during the time in the Fall when the Welland day crew (TE11) did their Saturdays in Hamilton. They're on the Stelco lead with a pull of empty two-bays from Bell & MacKenzie.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/IMG_2253-200x150.jpg)

![Trillium (or is it GIO now - honestly I am not even sure) 108 rolls by the future home of their two-bay engine house (that will fit four units I am told). They've been parking the power at Feeder since the Spring, and I was told the build of this engine facility was to have been completed by now, so I can't really speak to the timing of when it will even start at this point. Before this they'd parked their power by Atlas Steel in Welland, where the deadline still makes its home.

The ties, coming to Trillium off of CP, will be dropped near SLM in Welland and unloaded by the section crew, and the boxcars will continue on to St. Catharines.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/IMG_3197-200x150.jpg)

![Since these 875s are starting to make a little noise here on RP, I'll take you back to the first one. After taxiing to Fort Erie, the crew had just gotten on 3828 before this shot, and were getting ready to depart with a string of new build grain hoppers that had been temporarily stored there before heading to Winnipeg on this train. 3828 was dropped the night before by 530, on its return trip from Buffalo, which has been the norm for most (but not all) of these 875s.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/IMG_2408-200x150.jpg)

![CN 3236, sporting the flashy CN 100 logo, is running solo on CN G875 - unit new build grain hoppers from NSC. These trains, originating out of Fort Erie and destined for Winnipeg, have been running occasionally since the end of October (the first was October 28) and have been a nice treat; offering something seldom seen in the Southern Ontario railfanning landscape.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/IMG_3711-200x150.jpg)

![C93 has just arrived in Fort Erie and is pulling ahead to clear the switch so that they can shove back into the south side of the yard to make their set off for CN. In a move that is now largely the realm of SD40Es, it's a treat to get an SD40-2 lead on C93 these days. ![Following up on some discussion earlier this month of Torch River Rail's car loading facility in Arnold's shot of 1432 here, I offer this view of the facility itself in Choiceland, Saskatchewan. I've told the story in other submissions, but this was a pure luck find. I was out for a drive north of Saskatoon as it was cloudy in the city and immediate area, and when I was in Prince Albert I decided to continue onward as I thought at minimum I could grab a roster shot in Choiceland and then drive across the infamous bridge in Nipawin. But as I arrived in Choiceland I saw the headlights of 1432 pulling ahead so I scrambled for this shot and then the chase was on.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_2761-200x150.jpg)

![The first train down the Belt Line since the Christmas Eve/Christmas snowfall encountered some troubles. With a pull of scrap loads from AIM, they stalled on the grade coming up from underneath the Grimsby Sub, and had to leave part of their train by Barton Street and burning out a traction motor in the process. They're pictured here heading back from Kinnear to grab those remaining cars, passing one of the old Belt Line customers - Lawson Lumber - on their way. The site has been closed for some time, although does host occasional TV/movie filming.

Thanks to Lance for the info on Lawson, and many other Hamilton questions I have asked over time.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_3410-200x150.jpg)

![One year ago today (though it certainly feels like a lifetime ago), one of OSR's F-units made a rare appearance on the Cayuga Clipper and I believe this was the only time one ran as far as Courtland. They're pictured here in Courtland, having run around the empty centrebeam they'd picked up off the main at nearby Townsend Lumber to the west. They'd brought four loads for the Agromart here in town with them on this day.

At this point the Cayuga was on borrowed time, with OSR planning to cease operating it in April 2020. The next run after this, and those that followed, would see large crowds of railfans along for the chase. This one however was fairly quiet.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_4720-200x150.jpg)

![I have a sneaking suspicion this may be one of the last (if not the last) times Martech will haul tanks out of the former Stelpipe facility on the east end of Welland. They are currently in the process of moving to the former Russel Metals building in Port Robinson, and both sites have been bustling with activity for weeks now. The tanks are sent here to be cleaned for inspection, I believe.

I am not sure what is up with the former Stelpipe centrecab, 615, but it is inside the facility currently. I haven't seen it move in over a year, and the blue centrecab has been making moves for both Martech and Welded Tube.

I am not sure what the future holds for this facility with Martech moving. Part of me wonders if this is related to the HOPA Niagara project, which speaks of sites in Thorold, Welland, and Port Colbone. The Thorold site was recently announced earlier this month, leaving both the Port Colborne and Welland sites as unknowns.
