A different take on the bridge at Jordan, CNR 6060 makes it’s return trip from Niagara Falls to Toronto with it’s second last excursion run in Ontario, running under the banner of the “Maple Leaf” in homage to the joint <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=49023>Lehigh Valley/Canadian National train</a> discontinued in 1961.<br><br>Two days later, Saturday, July 26 would be 6060’s final run in Ontario with the “Canadian Crusader” special doing a loop around Lake Simcoe, north on the Bala to Washago, and back south via the Newmarket. A week later, on Saturday, August 2, 6060 would be on train 375 departing Toronto for Edmonton, arriving on Friday, April 8. CNR U-2-g 6200 brings a morning commuter train through Sunnyside while motorists idle on the new Gardiner Expressway, this section opened in August 1958. One of the two morning joint NYC/TH&B/CPR trains from New York, 322 or 324 per the 1959 timetable, departs Sunnyside for the short run into Toronto and the end of the journey. CPR G3G Pacific 2399 leads the train. Built by CLC in 1942, it will be scrapped in 1961. A light dusting of snow is in the air as the St. Thomas job cuts across the open fields just east of Putnam with a pair of GP9s running long hood forward. Having a few hours of free time, I had been headed to St. Thomas after getting word LDSX 1597 had been dropped overnight for GIO Rail's new operation on the Cayuga Sub, and figured as long as I'm in the area, may as well take advantage of a short chase on the OSR. Shortly however, I would break off my chase near Mossley once I got word <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47470>the Cayuga was alive</a> with the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47471>first train to Tilsonburg south</a> since April 2020.

Via Rail train 663 zips past the shuttered St. Mary's Junction station with a pair of CN 3100 series RS18s on the point. For a number of years, the building has sat boarded up surrounded by fencing, but has finally seen a new use in recent years. <a href=https://brokenrailbrewing.ca/>Broken Rail Brewing,</a> a small brewpub, has spent the last few years restoring the station and <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=26906>the former GTW caboose</a> on the property with plans to use it as a lunch counter or food truck style setup in the future. It’s just after 7am as U-2-g 6228 leads Train 94, the joint Lehigh Valley/Canadian National Maple Leaf through Bayview Junction for Toronto with the usual red Lehigh Valley combine up front along with Pullman sleepers filling out the consist alongside the CNR cars. CPR ALCO S2 7039 and hump booster B-100 roll over the hump at St. Luc Yard in 1955, possibly in a demonstration to the crowd off to the left. 7039 wears the short-lived “smiley” paint scheme, debuted on end cab switchers in 1947, and was one of a handful of S2’s modified for multiple unit service with hump boosters B-100, B-101 at St. Luc Yard. Built by ALCO in 1946, 7039 would be retired in 1984. B-100, built in 1951 by MLW, would survive much longer, being rebuilt in 1982 to scale test car CPR 420931, and eventually sold for scrap in 2014. Per a pamphlet given out on a <a href=http://www.trainweb.org/oldtimetrains/photos/cpr_facilities/st_luc_tour.htm>1962 tour of CP’s St. Luc Yard by the National Harbours Board Conference,</a> the St. Luc hump was the first of its kind in Canada, and the first to employ automatic switch control. Back in service after it's extensive boiler inspection, 99-year old Waterloo Central Railway 9 leads it's train south through the WCR yard at St. Jacob's.

No longer in use for passengers, the CPR station at Goderich stands at the end of the line overlooking the shores of Lake Huron. These rails will see their last train in just over a decade on December 16, 1988. Today, all rails are gone, but the station has been relocated across the former yard closer to the lake, now serving <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35214>as the Beach Street Station restaurant.</a><br><br><i>Dan or Don Dover Photo, Jacob Patterson Collection Slide. First generation passenger power sits on the shop tracks at Spadina, including two GMD-1s, one of which is equipped with snow shields beneath the handrails, a GP9, and an S7 for work around the terminal. The Steele-Briggs Seed Co. building can be seen in the background at the corner of Spadina Ave. and Front St. The company specialized in seeds for the Canadian climate and growing season, and shipped many of it's seeds out by rail, the sidings located on the south side of the building, lasting until removal from the parking lot in late 2015. <b>The Last Mixed, Part 2.</b> On Saturday, August 4, 1962, four railfans from the Upper Canada Railway Society, including Basil Headford, boarded Canadian Pacific Mixed train M741 at Guelph headed northwest to Goderich on what was the final run of southern Ontario’s last CPR mixed train.<br><br>On the Goderich Sub, through Passenger service from Hamilton to Goderich (daily except Sunday trains 637/640 per 1954 timetable) ended in 1955, with service south of Guelph Junction to Hamilton cancelled. During the 1930’s, this run was usually held by gas electric 9007 and a trailer <a href= https://scontent-yyz1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/274875428_7099366976804433_6343072801739430102_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=730e14&_nc_ohc=1RVW3tlnq4EAX9NOcML&_nc_ht=scontent-yyz1-1.xx&oh=00_AT99vsBkUwM9xpk9nfL_vhP6mYOeDko1SDR0gTt42aEAuA&oe=62902289>as seen in this March 1939 image at Guelph.</a> Guelph Junction – Guelph Service remained <a href= http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46944>typically using gas electric 9004</a> until April 26, 1958, when service was cut from six round trips per day to two round trips, and the doodlebug would be swapped for a mikado and combine. Months later in fall 1958, this too would be replaced by a mixed train, which in turn would be cut in the fall of 1960, leaving just the mixed north of Guelph.<br><br>Here, CPR 8144 arrives back at Guelph with the last M742. The siding switch has been lined for the station platform and once the train is spotted at the station, CPR mixed train service in southern Ontario will be history. CPR S3 6549 sits at Lambton roundhouse outside the motive power office building (note bay window), which housed the “General Locomotive Foreman, the Shop Foreman, Boiler Foreman, the crew clerks,” and various other positions. It also contained a booking-in room for engine crews. The smokestack at right is attached to the boiler room off the machine shop. 583 heads for Guelph to work around <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=48813>the St. Patrick's Ward</a> neighbourhood. South of Corwhin, they are approaching the crossing known as "Danger Bell" in reference to the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=31507>style of crossing protection</a> used here in years past which featured a flashing "DANGER" sign.
