![On a gorgeous March day, OSR's Woodstock assignment is seen pulling a lift from the CP down the Galt main. They would drag the lift to the yard at Woodstock, cut off, and proceed light engines back home to Salford. Since then, RS-18, 181, has been sidelined, leaving 182 as the only remaining operational MLW on the OSR.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/IMG_8474-4-200x150.jpg)

![At left, 568 switches up the yard after a failed attempt for Stratford earlier. To the right, is 568's earlier power (9449 4725), combined with 540's set that only lasted a day or two (2090, 5849, 4902). 587 would later take that set and 568's earlier train westward under the cover of darkness.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/IMG_0034-200x150.jpg)

![Needing some sun on the front page, and out in the real world, I thought I'd throw something in the mix to provide just that. 7014 hauls east on the Galt with a bunch of cans in tow for Toronto and points east. I think this was 650, but who knows. I don't see or care for much CP, but when I do, I make sure it's worthwhile.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/IMG_4106-2-200x150.jpg)

![A trio of Canadian Pacific units are pulling a cut of tanks from Yellowline (I believe) passing by the location of the former Stelco Rod Mill. As discussed many times on this site, the green shack just north-east of the crossing is the former Stelco Guard Shack. The area has changed a ton, but at least rail service still remains. If you haven't seen it already, Jason Noe has quite a photo from this location back in the 90's, and gives a great perspective on how much has came and gone from then to now. Worth a look if you haven't already.
As for the operations here, I believe this is TH41 based on older images and info I've gathered. However, being five years ago, and me not venturing into Hamilton very often, corrections and advice are always welcome as I may be wrong.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/IMG_7894-200x150.jpg)

![A warm May day last year brought me out to Stratford, ON, where after following 568 from Kitchener with RLK 4095 in tow (set off just before this frame), they are now seen putting together their outbound train for customers further down the line towards Pottersburg. They are pictured here running up the ladder track, framed beside Jordan spreader CN 50948, which has spent the last year and a half resting away in the MOW tracks after the ill-fated work extra last year. Full consist that day into Stratford was CN 4131- CN 9427- CN 7521 - RLK 4095 and a measly single tank car.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_8961-200x150.jpg)

![On a gorgeous April morning, (at the time) recently re-activated RS23 503 is back doing her thing, as they drill cars in Tillsonburg after making the trip down from Salford earlier. The hogger gives a nice touch of the throttle as they shove a cut, releasing the notorious MLW/ALCO smoke that we all love. Great crew and a great chase, although it wasn't long before the clouds rolled in. Glad I got the best of the morning light at least.
Recently, this unit has been sidelined once again after a few weeks/months back on the road last year. Currently the only MLW in active service on the OSR is RS18, 182. Better than nothing, but never take advantage of these old girls. Never know when you'll have your last shot.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/IMG_6881-200x150.jpg)

![On a chilly but bright March evening, the 1500 or 1600 Hamilton Yard job performs its duties at NSC with one of, if not the only GMTX locomotive(s) ever assigned to the Hamilton Terminal. I absolutely despise these things, especially now in their CN patch-jobs, but after seeing this and rarely ever a photo of one in Hamilton, I figured it'd be an interesting addition to the site. I remember not being impressed that this was the engine facing the sun, as 7258 and 1408 were trailing behind it, but I made up for that on later dates :)](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/IMG_1068-200x150.jpg)

![Rolling through the plant at Norval, GEXR 432 is under the watchful eye of a CN foreman as they bring their light train from Stratford and Kitchener to Mac yard. Lots has changed in this image, obviously GEXR is long gone from the Halton and Guelph subs, but this location at Norval has changed dramatically too. Hardly recognizable now with all the expansion and housing additions.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/IMG_0019-200x150.jpg)

![After making a run to Kitchener to set-off and lift, 542 is pictured here heading home to Hespeler with two lumber cars in tow for either Gillies Lumber or Hunt's Logistics, can't recall which customer. A nice scene reminiscing of the 1990's on these sleepy branchlines, the only thing missing is the van on the tail end.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/IMG_7603-200x150.jpg)

![On a warm spring afternoon, 540 is near Guelph Sub track speed on its return trip back to their home terminal of Kitchener. 7521 is in charge on this leg of the run, and is one of many former hump yard service units that have kicked their legs out onto the road over the past year and a half. With the GMD-1s sold off or retired, and a handful of GP9RM's being retired as well by the months, CN has resorted to these 7500 series units to take their place, along with the purchase of 20 or so ex GMTX GP38-2s. Many of CNs ex Oakway SD60s, and SD40-2Ws have been given R/C capabilities and are taking on yard service roles at various terminals to substitute for these hitting the open road, although a number of SD40-2Ws have had R/C capability for some time now. Nonetheless, something different for anyone in areas where 4 axle power is utilized.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/IMG_8339-200x150.jpg)

![After a day of working around Guelph and Kitchener, 542 shoves two cars lifted from Traxxside into the what's left of the old Guelph siding, before departing light engines down the Fergus spur for Hespeler. Late afternoon winter light is my favourite, so I made sure to soak that up while watching these veterans do their thing on the same steel they would have decades on decades ago.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/IMG_4817-1-200x150.jpg)

![While GIO railway was performing the last revenue movements on the remainder of the Owen Sound Sub, something else caught my eye. A rare early morning 568 move (or westbound freight in general) from Kitchener straight shot to Stratford.
I was in fact on my way to check out the GIO move when I drove by the Kitchener yard, and saw this 4-pack just finishing up their shove move to grab the conductor in the Kitchener siding. This was odd as usually any train switching the west end that early, ends up moving to the east end and going to Shantz and/or Guelph/Acton. But once I saw the conductor getting on board, and the huge train of mixed cars for HCL, GEXR, Kellys and more, I knew something different was up. So I stuck around and took advantage of the chance, and knocked some shots off my list west of Kitchener in the nice morning light. Here's one of them just between Kitchener and Petersburg.
Also not sure if this was and extra or not, but they called themselves 568 on the radio.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/IMG_4422-200x150.jpg)

![On a gorgeous late summer evening, an afternoon belt pack job shoves their way into Hamilton's Industrial Sector J, heading to one of many industries located in the area. ![A gorgeous fall day, and nothing to do after work, usually means a trip to the OSR for me. This particular day, I ran into the Woodstock job bringing traffic down to Belmont, where they'll make a handful of moves and head back east for Woodstock. I may have missed the CPR era on the Elgin and Oxford county branchlines, but I certainly won't complain about this. It's as close as I'll get, but only a sprinkle of dust compared to what these lines have seen before my time..](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/IMG_4833-2-200x150.jpg)

![On a miserable April morning back in 2018, a fan shared a tip about Amtrak 514 leading evening train 98 eastbound to Union, where it would wye and return as VIA 97 the following day. Knowing this, I opened my weather app to see what I may be venturing into. Long behold, an April blizzard. Just great....however, something like this cancels out any weather to me. Turns out I wasn't the only one with this idea. Multiple fans were out to capture this days 97, including quite the photo line here at Wellington St in the hammer. I don't shoot much passenger, however with the Maple Leaf suspended due to COVID-19, and VIA due to recieve their fresh Chargers at the end of the year, I'm glad I shot what I could, and still can.
Anyways, back to the reason I'm even sharing this right now, happy 50th to Amtrak. Its good to see a potential resurgance of its system, and even rumours of returning Chicago/Detroit - Toronto service have been thrown out there. It'll be interesting to watch and see what happens to the United States' largest passenger carrier in the next few years. Hopefully the next 50+ years of Amtrak keeps on rolling smooth.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_8314-3-200x150.jpg)

![In early 2018, one of the 0700 or 0800 SOR yard jobs (corrections welcome, my notes contained everything but the ID) switches out one of the few Bunge locations in the Hamilton area on a beautiful morning. I watched these guys switch Stuart St for a bit earlier until CN 551 called out the approach to Hamilton with a trio of CN GP9RMs. They ended up running to Parkdale which I also shot, and a few other industries on the Grimsby Sub before running back to Aldershot. I then ran back into the SOR job as I slowly crept back home, and thus came this photograph. If only the GP9 led though. :)](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7215-1-200x150.jpg)
