Having successfully (and slowly) navigated the gaggle of grade crossings that is the Havelock Sub through Peterborough, T07 has finally made it to the west side of town and the way is now clear. They'll still be picking their way west along the 10mph trackage, but at least they have fewer automobiles to worry about. 1412hrs.

CN 999 crawls westward along the Wainwright Sub near Poe, AB., behind a westbound freight meeting an eastbound ahead. And another eastbound, and another eastbound, and another. Busy times, everybody gets to wait. Thanks to TDS for the heads up. 1749hrs.

I was fortunate to have stumbled upon CP's A08 assignment to Coutts, AB / Sweetgrass, MT., and a connection with the BNSF, as I was myself headed to the border crossing this day. CP 6261, 6309, and 6251 lead the way past the surviving wheat kings at Warner. 1309hrs.

A trio of SD40-2W's (5321, 5279, 5325) pass a surviving grain elevator in Mayerthorpe, AB, working westbound with 515's train to Whitecourt. For me, it's hard to believe that such as shot is still possible in 2018. 1538hrs.

GEXR 431 races across the flatlands east of New Hamburg at a brisk 10mph or so. Wide open embankment with sun is nice, slow order where I was trying to decide between two places to shoot, jackpot... got both. QGRY 6908, GEXR 3054, GEXR 3394. 1654hrs.

With a big slug of ballast loads on the headpin, one of the queens of the fleet leads 8818, 2413, and 369's train through the curve at Bowmanville. The trees are really encroaching on this location, guys... just sayin'. 1908hrs.

CP 2259, 2211, and 6259 lead an eastbound loaded ballast train at the east end of Spicer during a bit of a downpour. Fresh, clean ballast... what could be better? 1720hrs.

As the sun sets, CN 148 rounds the curve at Lovekin as they get into the climb towards Newtonville. There is no sign of the train slowing as it passes, so CN 5632, IC 1017, and CN 5783 must all be performing adequately today. 1919hrs.

After taking some sort of delay on the Winchester Sub, CP 113 has likely not met anything but green signals on her run over the Belleville Sub. At Newtonville, CP 8840 is greeted with a green at the approach signal to Lovekin siding, and since we did not see any other trains on the Belleville this day, it seems this would have been repeated at Darlington, Oshawa, Whitby, and Cherrywood. CP 9806 trails, 8930 is the DP. 1312hrs.

Having completed their work at Cameco, 518's crew reverse out of the spur behind the Port Hope depot and onto the south track of the Kingston Sub for the short run to the Cobourg yard. CN 4115 and 4125 power the train today. 1347hrs.

A few miles west of the yard, CN 2337 leading train 376 meets CN 2934 leading 305 outside of Belleville. As 376 slows for their crew change in town, 305 is accelerating from their recrew. Shortly however, a report of an unauthorized rider will have 305 stopped for about an hour in Trenton while the local and CN Police inspect the train (whoever was riding had long disappeared). 1203hrs.

Nearing the end of it's run dumping ballast between Lovekin and Port Hope, CP 4426, CEFX 3143, and CEFX 3109 round the curve a few hundred feet from the west home signal at Port Hope. Problems with the 3143 necessitated the addition of 4426 at Toronto Yard, which wasn't all bad given the not so common long hood forward orientation of the remote control equipped geep leading on the main. The return trip also saw the 4426 leading back to Toronto, the crew having run around the SD's in the back track at Spicer, where they ended their eastbound movement. 1747hrs.

I don't shoot off the Courtice Road bridge often, but it's a nice spot when the light, and the power, is good. Here we have 6037, 9003, and 5959 leading 235's train past Darlington siding on their run to Toronto Yard, which was still a yard in 2009. I shot the last run of the last five MLW's here in June of 1998 in similar light on train 923. That was a photographers delight, made to order by a few folks at St Luc whos names many here could probably guess at. Three C424's and two RS-18's; a nice send off to the era of 251's on CP. Pity the SD40-2 did not get the same treatment, as they made a far greater contribution to the company than the MLW's, having held down the vast majority of road assignments for decades, not to mention being favoured far above the MLW's by road and maintenance crews alike. One assumes management was also pleased with GM's rugged six motor, given the 400 plus copies they bought new. But CP is a different company in 2016 than they were in 1998, and the SD40-2 era has passed largely in the same way they spent their service lives... unremarked. 1901hrs.

A late winter ice storm has allowed one last chance to shoot in a winter wonderland before spring weather arrives, and with slim pickings over the winter of 2015/2016 for snow in my locale, this was most appreciated. Also appreciated was the chance to shoot a 412 with CN 5454 and 5777 as power. And I have it on good word that the hogger on this train was thrilled to have the SD60 leading, appreciating the smooth and reliable power those used motors provide. Everybody wins, lol. 1314hrs.

What I'm guessing is train 391 emerges from under the CP Belleville Sub overpass trailing CN 9313, CR 6463, and CN 2103. This goes back to pretty much the start of my photographing trains (on slides that is) is a, gasp, Fuji transparency. Come to think about it, I was using a Canon at the time, so it's remarkable that this came out at all, lol. The power was nothing special for that time, though I always enjoyed catching one of the straight GP40's on the point since we were still drowning in a pool of GP40-2L's, and they were a little unique. The Conrail SD40-2 was payback horse power hours, and we're common at the time, though SD50's seemed to be more often used as HPH repayment units. And the HR-616... again common at the time, but boy do I miss them now.
