About Paul O'Shell

Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. <b> Tucked away until the next run </b> <br>
VIA 6441 is on the point of VIA 006 The Skeena that I arrived in Jasper on from Prince George, BC earlier on this beautiful September 15th afternoon. <br>
After spending a couple of days in Jasper, I will reboard this same consist for the return trip to Prince George and ultimately Prince Rupert, BC as train VIA 005 The Skeena. <br>
One unit, one baggage car, one economy coach, and one Park car made for a nice size train. <br>
The head end crew and on-board staff on both directions of the journey were fabulous. Lots of interaction with passengers, and always willing to chat.

<b> Westbound VIA No. 2 ... Is that possible </b> <br>
VIA 002 The Canadian with VIA 88708 Jasper Park leading is heading west out of the station track in Jasper on this beautiful September morning. <br>
With major track realignment and other construction work at the east end of CN's Jasper yard, it was necessary for VIA No. 2 to complete its normal station stop and servicing, then make a reverse move from the station track and head west to CN Home at Mile 0.5 on the Albreda Sub. before resuming its eastward journey to Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Toronto. <br>
Under the watchful eye of the second engineer, the movement rolls across Hazel Avenue crossing at the west end of CN's Jasper yard.

<Lookin' good after all these years </b> <br>
CN's beautiful station at McBride, BC has been well taken care of over the decades and is looking great! <br>
Constructed in 1919 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTPR), it is now a designated historical railway station. <br>

<b> Next stop Jasper </b> <br>
VIA 002 'The Canadian' crosses Hazel Avenue at the west end of CN's Jasper yard and is about to take the turnout onto the station track putting the consist right next to the platform when it comes to a stop. <br>
Today's Canadian would not depart the station in normal fashion due to major reconstruction work by CN at the east end of the yard. VIA 002 would make a reverse movement from the station track, out onto CN's Albreda Sub. to CN Home at Mile 0.5 before proceeding on its journey east. <br>

<b> Standby power </b> <br>
VIA 6458 is coupled to the consist of VIA 005 The Skeena on the shed track in Jasper yard September 16, 2025. <br>
This unit will be brought out and become the lead unit on tomorrows VIA 001 The Canadian when it makes its scheduled stop. <br>
There were a lot of switching moves to position The Skeena and this single VIA unit into the shed track on this busy afternoon in Jasper. The weather cooperated fully with my photo taking efforts during my two-day layover in town.

<Familiar sight </b> <br>
For the past several years, each time I visit or roll through Jasper, CN 2100 has been parked in the yard just east of the CN Operations building. <br>
Most times it is sitting idle, however, on occasion I have seen trainees out learning some skills that will help get them qualified for train service. <br>
That was not the case on this beautiful afternoon as CN 2100 basked in the warm sunshine under a clear blue sky. :-)

<b> All Aboard! </b> <br>
All that remains is for the step box to be tossed into the vestibule before VIA 006 The Skeena can depart the station at Prince George, BC on this overcast, foggy September morning. <br>
My recent trips on VIA 006 and VIA 005 The Skeena from Prince Rupert, BC to Jasper, AB and return had this same consist in both directions. One locomotive, one baggage car, one economy coach, and one Park car. <br>
Two engineers, two on-board crew, and a passenger count ranging from 27 to 45 made for a wonderful journey that was not too crowded in the dome of the Park car. :-) <br>
Another trip in the books. Hmmm, what's next? :-)

<b> Majestic </b> <br>
Background or foreground, take your pick. Both the mountains and the locomotive are majestic in their own right. <br>
CN 6015 continues to look great on its perch just west of the VIA station in Jasper, AB. The pigeons have taken up residence inside various openings in and around the cab, and a small tree is growing out the top of the tender right behind the cab roof. <br>
Another beauty day during my recent stay in Jasper. :-)

<b> Hey, that's not a new locomotive </b> <br>
CN 3417 (nee-CN 2594) has a new crew on board and is rolling slowly across Hazel Avenue at Mile 0.29 Albreda Sub. at the west end of CN's Jasper Yard on September 16, 2025. <br>
The on-board crew were super friendly with their horn, waves, and information on what appeared to be a 'new' unit. :-)

<b> A big smile from Jasper </b> <br>
Just got home from a round trip on VIA 006 & 005 The Skeena this past week. <br>
The weather was spectacular on both days I spent in Jasper, and my smile was as big as the one on this CP auto rack that was parked in the CN yard. <br>

Caboose CN RY22 (ex-CN 7xxxx) is confined to the CN Engineering Yard (Rail Yard) at Transcona (Winnipeg) MB as seen here on September 11, 2003. <br>
Wish I had copied the original CN running number stamped on the frame above the trucks. :-(

<b> CN Poseidon </b> <br>
CN 100004 bulkhead flat is part of CN's Poseidon Fire Fighting consist and is resting at their Kamloops, BC yard Mile 139.4 Clearwater Sub. on a beautiful April 30, 2025 evening. <br>
I captured this and several other cars of the special service train during a scheduled stop of VIA 001 The Canadian. <br>
There is always so much to see when traveling across Canada by train. :-)

<b> Coming soon to a railroad near you </b> <br>
CN 50938 Jordan Type J 4-100 spreader, serial number 1457, built in 1976, and CN 50944 Jordan Type J 4-100 spreader, serial number 1446, built in 1975 sit at the ready in Saskatoon Yard Mile 191.9 Watrous Sub. on November 22, 2024. <br>
It won't be long before these spreaders and other snow fighting units get prep'd for this coming winter protection program.

<b> Let the Journey Begin! </b> <br>
VIA 001 The Canadian begins another westbound journey across Canada as units VIA 6415, VIA 6432, and VIA 6438 pull the departing consist out of Union Station and pass under the Bathurst St., bridge at Mile 1.0 USRC Weston Sub. Toronto, ON this very pleasant July 30, 2025 morning.

<b> Getting some TLC </b> <br>
VIA 6415 is on the point of VIA 001 The Canadian at Jasper, AB Mile 0.0 CN Albreda Sub. on August 2, 2025, and is getting a little Tender Loving Care from VIA Rail maintenance personnel during the trains stop in the historic town. <br>
Front windshields are getting a thorough cleaning, and a replacement right side ditch light is about to be installed. <br>
When arriving as scheduled, the early morning 3-hour stop allows plenty of time for a walk around town, and for some great railroad photography. :-)

<b> Modern Canadian Passenger Equipment at Work </b> <br>
GOT 302 pulls up alongside VIA 2302 inside the Union Station train shed in Toronto, ON July 30, 2025. <br>
These sleek new trains are quite the contrast to the 1950's Budd built equipment on VIA Rail's 'The Canadian' that is boarding passengers on the track next to them.

<b> Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to Winnipeg </b> <br>
VIA No. 1 The Canadian has pulled into the Winnipeg train shed and passengers detrain to the sound of announcements detailing local sites to see, and available off-train time and reboarding information coming through the platform speaker system. <br>
In a few minutes the platform will be closed to passengers as the train receives a full-service including, sewage dump, watering, fresh food and linens, head-end and on-board crew changes. <br>
All part of another great cross-Canada trip on The Canadian. :-)

<b> Watch Your Step </b> <br>
VIA 002 is making its station stop in Melville, SK shortly after a surprise late spring snowfall. The platform has yet to be cleaned making for a sloppy and slippery walk for the few that chose to detrain. <br>
Restoration work continues on the classic CN station.

<b> CN Passenger Equipment </b> <br>
CN 10800 & CN 10900 haven't moved from their deadline location in Kamloops yard for quite some time now. <br>
They are now joined by other former CN passenger equipment. <br>
KHR 402 Monte Lake (ex-VIA 5592, nee-CN 5592) built 1954. <br>
KHR 403 Riverside Park (ex-VIA 5590, nee-CN 5590) built 1954.
