CN 435 rolls by the approach signal to Mansewood on a lovely February afternoon with CN 5420, IC 1025 and CN 2154 providing the horsepower on this 124 car train.

CN M 31441 16 splits the signals at the north end of Brechin East on a very sunny, very mild February afternoon. A pair of SD70M-2's, 8813 and 8853 have 95 cars on the drawbar as they make their way down to Pefferlaw for a meet with M 31731 18.

Far from its usual stomping ground, D&H 7304 leads an 8 car spray train past the West Switch at Coakley and into Woodstock. CP 2WGA-19, operating from Toronto to London, spraying herbicide along the right of way at a leisurely 30MPH pace. While not the most prestigious train on the road, the D&H power sure look at good on the lowly spray train.

Quebec City to Toronto manifest M 30921 17 rolls through the West Island catching the last rays of sunlight, as a rainbow lights up the dull sky. Breaking the trend of AC GEVos on everything, 309 provides a brief reprieve with a trio of DC GEVos (Sad how this is considered interesting...) CN 2327, CN 2288 and mid train DP CN 2310 keep this 142 car drag moving westwards.

With the City of Montreal's skyline in the distance, hot shot Q 12031 18 pulls their 205 car train off the Victoria Bridge, enroute to Joffre and eventually Halifax, Nova Scotia. Power today was CN 2840, CN 2870 and mid-train DP CN 2817, with over 13,000ft of traffic for the east coast.

CN 2039, CN 2660 and BCOL 4619 work hard to hold back the 167 cars that make up M 39491 12 as they reach the bottom of the Copetown hill. Since hitting the double track at Komoka, 394 had been struggling to keep this 10,200 foot train ahead of 148 who was operating on the north track, however at Brantford 148 got the upperhand and overtook 394. 148 had passed through Bayview 8 minutes ago with the CN 2152, CN 5689 handling 121 cars. I guess I should have gone to Brantford!

CP 2307, CEFX 3109 and CP 2263 team up to drag CP GPS-08 southwards down the MacTier Sub through Utopia, under threatening skies. Not quite the lashup that was roaming around last week with a pair of CEFX SD40-2's, however a pair of rebuilt geeps bracketing a veteran SD40 was a nice sight! CP GPS-08 originated at Sudbury and is made up of 40 Herzog Ballast Loads for the Belleville Sub and was filled out with 37 mixed freight. Shortly after rolling through Utopia, this train would stop to work at Spence.

CSXT 896 and CSXT 7719 power CN M 32721 24 through Pointe Claire on a quick trip down to Valleyfield, where the train will be handed over to the CSX. If all goes according to plan, this crew will hand over their 63 cars to the CSX crew and bring CN M 32621 24 back to Montreal in a few hours time. On the return movement, 326 was powered by CSXT 5355 and CSXT 4074 with 57 cars in tow.

CN L 52921 18 has just cleared the Rouses Point Sub at Southwark and NS 2764, NS 8858 and NS 6137 already have their dynamic brakes wailing as they slow their 80 car train down for the Victoria Bridge.

CP train 550 swings southward onto the Lacolle Sub after a quick 10 mile trip across the Adirondack Sub, from St. Luc Yard. UP 5519 South has a clearance to take them 27 miles across the South Shore to Rouses Point where the train will be handed off to the NS; on the tail end is UP 5509 working hard to keep this unit train moving.

CN TEST Train O 99911 27 cruises down grade at Mile 30 on the Halton Sub after meeting 148 at Speyside. The TEST Train had unfortunately set out CN 105 at Mac Yard and departed with the CN 8016 and 3 cars: AMTK 39037, CN 414852, CN 1057. O 99911 27 is operating from Halifax to New Orleans, where it will turn back north and set out the Amtrak sleeper in Chicago. Halifax to New Orleans TEST Train O 99911 27 eases upgrade through Beare on the block of CN M 37321 28. The TEST train is powered by CN 4806, CN 105 (typically used on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train out of the Soo) and 3 cars: Amtrak sleeper 39037, CN 414852, CN 1057. The 105 had been the sole power on the train from Winnipeg to Moncton, where it failed and CN 2197 was added to the train. At Halifax, CN 4806 was lifted and left in the lead position back to Toronto where the power would be swapped once more for the trip down south.

After the Easter long weekend ice storm, CP 112 with CP 9781 and mid-train DP unit CP 8933 sits in the siding track at Baxter after meeting CP 113 (CP 8616, CP 9607 and DP unit CP 8615). South of Alliston, train 421 is doubling away into the yard at Spence to perform their work and once he is clear, 112 will receive their clearance to depart for points south. The ice storm which occurred the previous day had blanketed southern Ontario with a layer of ice, with the Alliston/Baxter area being particularly hard hit. Areas further north must not have fared any better, as evidenced by the damage to the 9781. If you look closely, you will notice that both ditch lights are damaged, with the lights dangling below the front platform of the locomotive; if they still work, they will not do much good once the train gets rolling!

VIA P 00251 15 with VIA 6427, VIA 6440 and 15 cars departs Hornepayne crossing 5th Avenue at 1745, after waiting in the yard for Q 11131 18 and Q 10131 18 to operate through. Right behind the power is a Park Car and another coach deadheading to Toronto. In the background you can see the old coaling tower and to the right, the smokestack from the Roundhouse.

Wooden caboose CN 78642, the Sioux Lookout Auxiliary sits on display just south of yard and town of Sioux Lookout Ontario. CN 78642 rebuilt in Moncton in 1948, was originally built by ACF in 1912 as GTW 83287. Just across the road is an MLW 0-4-0 steam engine, Canada Creosoting 102 which was built in 1923 for the Quebec Development Company. If you look closely at this photo, you can see the tail end of the wye behind the caboose, along with the current CN office/bunkhouse in the background (building with the green roof). Like many places in Northern Ontario, Sioux Lookout is a shadow of its former self railway wise with few signs of the rich railroading history still visible. The town used to feature an 18 stall roundhouse, large yard and just east of Sioux Lookout at Superior Junction, the Graham Sub diverged southwards to Thunder Bay. All that remains today is a small yard and empty fields where the servicing facilities used to be located. The original station at Sioux Lookout has been renovated to serve passengers from VIA's Canadian. CN crews still trade off here, with Winnipeg crews handling trains on the Redditt Sub and Sioux Lookout crews working the Allanwater sub to Armstrong. As for the Graham Sub, it was abandoned and Superior Junction was renamed Superior. You can still see where the word Junction was painted over and the former right of way climbing away from the mainline and heading south into the forest towards Thunder Bay.

After testing the Caramat Sub from Armstrong to Hornepayne, CN O 99841 19 idles outside the station/office, at roughly the mid-way point of its journey across Northern Ontario. Veteran SD40-2 CN 5386 has the honours of leading CN's newest TEST, which consists of CNA 415867, CN 414852 and CN 1057, formerly the Louis Jolliet business car. After spending a night in "The Payne", the train will resume its journey eastwards across the Ruel Sub to Capreol and south to Toronto before heading east for the Maritimes.
