About rsd-17


I've been photographing trains in Canada since I immigrated from the U.K. in 1981. Currently I use an aging Sony Alpha 100 (the original Sony DSLR) and an LG G7 mobile phone. Most of my images are from southern Ontario (CP Belleville and CN Kingston subs.) I recently moved to Nova Scotia and I'm hoping to build a portfolio of images from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The were a number of railfans chasing CN Q123 out of Halifax today, and no wonder. Lead unit was as-delivered Illinois Central standard cab SD70 1028, followed by CN 2678 and BNSF 4314 trailing with a well loaded 286 axle train. July 22nd 2022 @ 13:05, CN Q123 by Springhill Jct. NS.

I was expecting Toronto-Halifax intermodal Z120 to show up at around 11;30 AT, but trains being trains they just get later. My driver (wife) was not thrilled! At least it was sunny with fresh snow on the ground, albeit on the chilly side (-11 C, with thankfully no wind.) September 21st, 2021 @ 14:58 at Little Forks Road, A407 is down to 172 axles after setting off a car at Springhill Jct. BCOL 4648 and CN 8845.

Oct 15th @ 10:17, A407, all intermodal out of Rockingham yard, finally takes the siding at Springhill Jct, NS to meet Z120, which had been waiting at a red signal for almost 30 minutes. 446 axles with CN 2911, CN 2837 and CN 3816. The siding (second longest between Moncton and Halifax) is 11,350 ft. Z120 is 12,806 feet, and A407 is 9,732 ft. You do the math.

Nov 14th 2021 @ 14:16 AT, Z120 at MP 42.5 CN Springhill sub (Thomson Road). 634 axles with CN 2844, CN 3257 and CN 2257. The leaves are gone! I've been waiting for this as it reveals the containers rounding the curve to the west of the crossing. The curve looks a lot sharper in real life than it does on the map. As a bonus the sun appeared at the right time.

Running about 20 minutes late on September 1st, 2021 @ 15:37 ADT, VIA #15 (the westbound "Ocean") passes through Oxford Jct, MP 46.9, CN Springhill sub with the VIA 6415 and 6414 back-to-back in charge.

Today I took a short hop on the first VIA (15) "The Ocean" since the pandemic led to VIA suspending service.The train was 12 minutes down when it slowed to a stop at Springhill Junction at 15:55 to pick up one passenger (me.) The coach I was in (line# 1503 - HEP 1) seemed to be about 1/3 full. We arrived in Amherst (shown here) at 16:16. About 6 people got off and about 6 joined the train.

July 31st, 2021 @ 08:14, CN train Z120 passing over the defect detector at MP 42.5, CN Springhill sub (Thomson Stn.) With CN 2916, CN 3815 trailing 446 axles at a reported 57 mph. DPU CN 2901 is mid-train. Dramatic morning sky.
