![Sunny skies and the word that 113 had 7022 and CMQ 1002 on the head end made for a quick and easy decision to go trackside. A very low afternoon sun soon eliminated two favourite spots, but "the pond" looked hopeful. Luckily the Mile Sign call from 113 came soon enough to assure sun, and soon afterward she made a wonderful sight skirting " the pond". This image is dedicated to James A Brown, great friend, railfan and familiar trackside companion to many around Palgrave and Spence. Jim was an exceptional and much published photographer, who just two months earlier would have been there for 113's passage. The other day he was surely there in spirit. Jim, this one's for you !!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/CP-113-7022-MP-30-1500-200x150.jpg)

![Sometimes it just all seems to come together. June 17 was one of those days. A tip that VIA was running an equipment extra west with 5 units and 25 cars was enough to get the adrenaline going and its timing made the Parry Sound bridge a good prospect. After spending an hour seeking the perfect spot, I gained permission to be on a dock which was actually closed to the public due to Covid 19. A couple of "heads up" contacts advised 011 had been stabbed for 55 minutes getting out of Toronto. That was actually beneficial as it gave the sun more time to be in the perfect position. Indeed, when 011 showed up, there was perfect light, a gorgeous sky lacking contrails or cloud and no seadoos churning the water. The 5 units running elephant style with none of them "wrapped", could not have been better. Yup, sometimes it does come together.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/20-221-VIA-11-6442-CS-RP-Parry-Sound-ON-June-17-2020-200x150.jpg)

![Sometimes the timing is perfect !
We had heard that 420 was heading our way with 6644 leading, and if things worked out just right, we would be at the CP - BCRY interchange at the same time as his southbound passage. Sure enough, we heard him call the signals at Essa and our unit was in the perfect position to be in the shot too. I love the "human element" in railroading, and when I saw I had also captured the two Conductors exchanging waves, it made my day.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/20-236-CP-420-6644-CCGX-1001-SB-DD-Utopia-ON-July-6-2020--200x150.jpg)

![The arrival of the CMQ units in Toronto on June 12 was a surprise to most and I was annoyed that " prior duties " did not allow me to shoot them. Then low and behold, the following day they were dispatched on 421. Luck was with me and the day was perfect. It took plenty of patience sitting in the grass watching birds and listening to frogs, but the end result proved worth it. Heading for an unknown fate, CMQ 9020 and 9022 were being hauled dead to Winnipeg on this monster 421. 13000 feet, 11000 tons and 804 axles. No wonder she was crawling.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/CP-421-8143-MP-30.3-Mactier-June-13-2020-200x150.jpg)

![Spending time in Agawa Canyon was an amazing experience. Alone with nature and a beautiful environment, except for a coupe of hours of a day when tourists arrived to share the place. My wife gives a big wave to Ken Gonneville, the engineer on the days Tour Train as it approaches Agawa Canyon Park. ![On a rare Sunday operation, BCRY 1001 has just pushed a number of short 40 foot hoppers into the Penetang Spur for storage. In 2019 this spur was packed with tankcars which became surplus when oil prices tanked. With North American rail traffic presently down due to the Covid-19 virus, unused railcars have to be put somewhere, and shortline trackage is often the perfect place.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/IMG_2739-200x150.jpg)

![For the second and possibly last time, VIA ran an equipment extra west out of Toronto TMC. With the announced major overhaul of the stainless steel HEP fleet, VIA is juggling cars to their Maintenance facilities. Today VIA had a five car consist for the trip to Winnipeg. With the Canadian presently cancelled until at least November, I figured this might be the last chance to get the beautiful stainless steel equipment heading westbound before the snow flies again.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/VIA-11-6427-CS-TJP-MP-37-Bala-May-17-2020--200x150.jpg)

![Once VIA Rail announced suspension of the Canadian and Ocean until November 2020, some interesting equipment moves started happening. Evidently to place HEP cars in locations for overhaul, some have been moved to Toronto, while others are being moved west. Mothers Day was when the first westbound equipment move took place. Identified as VIA 11, two 6400's power the 10 car mixed consist past MP 39 of the Bala Sub, just north of Pine Orchard.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/20-133-VIA-11-6437-RP-DA-MP-39-Bala-May-10-2020-200x150.jpg)

![Searchlight signal, a grey nose with beaver shield and a consist of boxes, tanks, hoppers and flats almost put me into a " back to the future " scenario on this dull cold Friday afternoon. Advice that 421 had 7016 as the lead had me out the door in short order. Heading towards the Mactier Sub, thoughts of lighting were establishing and eliminating spots until the RTC advised 421 he'd be meeting 112 at Palgrave. Definitely the first spot would be near the south switch as 421 would have to stop for the Conductor to get the self-restore switch before pulling into the siding. The decision paid-off. Got this and a few other shots before he headed to Spence for some work.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/20-127-CP-421-7016-Palgrave-ON-May-8-2020-200x150.jpg)

![In 1988 CN 6060 found herself at the BCR Steam Shop getting some major work performed. Once completed, the locomotive first spent some time switching freight cars at the BCR North Vancouver yard. Here she puts on quite a show as she gets a string of cars moving. The following day 6060 double-headed to Squamish and back with ex CP 3716, then to top it off, did the same thing the following day with Royal Hudson 2860.
Indeed, it was quite a time.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Stm-161-CN-6060-North-Vancouver-BC-May-20-1988-200x150.jpg)

![While admittedly not the best image as far as quality goes, I was swayed to post it due to the great discussions arising from a previous 6060 posting. Other than the Royal York and maybe that CN S13, for a moment Toronto Union looks more like a US terminal. A New York Central sleeper in the business car track and a Southern F7 and N&W unit on a passenger train ?? For the previous week, the NRHS had held its Annual Convention in Toronto and what a time it was. The Southern and N&W units were heading home to Roanoke VA and the NYC sleeper which had arrived on the Southern powered train made its way home on regular trains.
Indeed it was quite a week.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Stm-112-SOU-6141-Toronto-ON-July-27-1980-200x150.jpg)

![We didn't know how lucky we were in the late 70's and early 80's when it came to railfanning. CN ran twice weekly excursions between Toronto and Niagara Falls, and special excursions were running all over North America, be it steam or diesel. In July 1980, the NRHS had its Annual Convention in Toronto, and there were trips over GO, CN, the TTC and tours everywhere. A Southern F7 even occupied a stall at Spadina ! In this scene, CN 6060 puts on a great show as she returns from The Falls with an NRHS train.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Stm-088-CN-6060-Bayview-Jct-ON-July-19-1980-200x150.jpg)

![It would be hard to find a time when CP 136 had been so clean. Under a glistening coat of black paint, and with sharp freshly done lettering, CP 136 was loaned back to CP for a few days in 1980 to star in some Company television commercials. The location of this one is the Bolton station, which even saw landscaping and a spruce up with fresh paint.
136 and her train were moved around by diesel, and the steam locomotive was never actually fired up. Smoke and steam were done with special effects and as we see in this shot, there was a little too much fuel in the stack for a short time.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Stm-073-CP-136-CP-Comm-Bolton-ON-June-4-1980-200x150.jpg)

![Well, I can safely say that today, no matter what price ticket you bought at the Rogers Centre, you'd never get a view like this !
Looking across an array of CN,VIA and even GO power, not to mention a bunch of steam generators, CN 6060 heads west towards Niagara Falls.
The tailend of 6060's train has just passed the John Street interlocking tower, which today hides flat-roofed under a pedestrian bridge. Indeed, more has changed than just the Toronto skyline.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Stm-084-CN-6060-Spadina-ON-July-19-1980-200x150.jpg)

The date is Aug 11 1982, and 1201 has been brought to North Bay to help celebrate the 100th Anniversay of the city. Excursions were operated over the CN between North Bay and South River. ![An alert that a pair of my favourite type of locomotives were heading south on a CWR train was more than enough reason to get out of the house. Social distancing is pretty easy when railfanning, and apart from a great conversion across a road, I was on my own. Local knowledge is always great, and a last minute decision to change locales seemed to pay off. The CWR train sounded great, and even with the second unit dead, the hogger seems to be enjoying the trip. Window wide open and the sounds of a real unit.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/20-1-CP-5973-S-CWR-MP-30-3-Mactier-Sub-Apr7-2020-200x150.jpg)

Ex CPR 136 sits on the Elora Sub while 1057 is on the Orangeville Sub, later to become the Owen Sound Spur. The train is working its way south on the Lewvan Sub running south-east from Regina. Sadly on this same day, the elevator at the Subdivisions namesake town will succumb to the wrecking ball.
