"That's not a CN locomotive!" Nope. One of five brand-new Algerian National Railways/Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF) export locomotives built by EMD in London ON (model GT36HCW) heading to the port for shipment overseas. Factory fresh SNTF 060DS02 to -05 were on this special GEXR train headed for delivery to CN, along with four Euro Cargo Rail Class 66 (or 77 rather) units for the United Kingdom. The old and well-known Peel Memorial Hospital by Centre St. serves as this photo's placemarker for Brampton, Ontario.

  1. CP used to get this type of shipmemnt a few deades before this shot. We would take them from London to Toronto by way of “downtown” setting them off at John Street.GMD had a pair of “transition cars” with buffers & oddeuropean couplers at one end & knuckle couplers on the other. The foreign units were sandwiched between them. I couldn’t tell from this angle, but perhaps these are also transition cars?

  2. Yeah, they always ran with those buffer cars for these kind of Class 66 units. These ones were a pair of ex-CN 667000-series flatcars that were eventually renumbered EMDX 11001 & 11002. When the GMD plant shut down the two flats apparently went south of the border to the US. I think I’ve seen old shots of the red CP buffer flats before somewhere on the internet.
