A good source of intel is always a treat, and makes catching the goodies so much easier. Try as I might, whenever they shipped these particular export locos out from the factory for forwarding to the port it was either cloudy or snowy, and sometimes both. But trailing on GEXR #432 this cloudy day was one of them: E.F. Carajas 747, an EMD SD70M, heading to its new owner in Brazil. Due to the different gauge track in Brazil, it was necessary to mount the locomotive on a heavy-duty flatcar (8-axle KRL 70986 in this shot) instead of moving it on its own wheels over North American trackage. According to sources, these units were part of an order numbered 728-755, built by EMD in London, Ontario Canada for mining company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in Brazil (CVRD, the company, is now part of giant VALE) to operate on their railroad Estrada de Ferro Carajás ("E.F.Carajas"). The photographer shot the first 6 units of the order in transit December 13th 2006, and missed the last unit as it went under his GO bus on Airport Road, March 27th 2007.

  1. I caught one of these units too on March 28th, 2007:

  2. Nice catch. According to my notes, 751 shipped for CN as a group with 743, 751, 752 & 750, all separated in GEXR #432 on 03-23-2007. Unfortunately I wasn’t trackside for that…can’t get ‘em all!

*Caption correction, I shot the first 3 (not 6) on 12-12-06 (729-728-733), followed by 3 the day after on 12-13-2006 (730-731-732).
