If memory serves me right, this was the only time I saw both of STER's locomotives together, HR412 #3582 and TRRY 1842. At the time, I believe 3582 was stored serviceable just after receiving one of it's trucks back from Lambton Diesel in Sarnia for work (it sat for some time on just one truck). In April 2012, the engine was sent to work on the Port Colborne Harbour Railway when their 1859 had some problems. It has since been returned to the STER and now faces west. RS18u 1842 is almost as interesting and also has some CN blood: after a wreck in 1986 at Espanola, CP 8758 was rebuilt with frame and hood components from retired CN 3634. Time will tell if the rumours of imminent closure of the line are true, but if they are, wouldn't it be neat if OSR could pick up the unusual MLW's?

  1. Both are still on the property – 3582 needs new wheels before it can be moved out (was scheduled for yesterday)

Funny enough, I know someone who shot three units on the property once..

  2. Here is a cheap photo I took of 3582 missing its front truck:

  3. Thanks guys for the comments – Brad, thanks for the link – I couldn’t remember exactly when the truck was missing and if it was the front or rear one. IIRC, 1859 and 1842 both went to STER when purchased, and 1859 went to PCHR in April 2010. Did they have anything on STER before the 3582 and the RS18′s?

  4. Hi Peter. I found this link http://www.trilliumrailway.com/roster.asp and itis quite detailed in rregards to earlier STER motive power in respects to 3568 and 3575, both ex CN M420 (W). As it reads, 3575 was shipped but it doesn’t mention what happened to 3568, where it was scrapped or not.

It looks like there are discussions to have Ontario Southland work the Future Transfer facility at Tillsonburg and the possibility of working the IGPC Ethanol plant in Aylmer. So there’s hope for this line yet. :) Strange though, that the two industries I mentioned are relatively new, with new trackage and all. Sorry to see STER go.
