CN would relinquish control of this old branchline in downtown Thorold in just over a month to the fledgling Port Colborne Harbour Railway (Trillium; as all the non-core trackage in Niagara west of the canal was sold off by CN on September 19, 1999. The old Pine St. trackage was once part of the Fonthill Spur, most of which was ripped up many years ago. On this day CN 1316 and 1305 are on their way north to track's end to fetch boxcars at an industry there. I believe this image taken at the corner of Pine St. S and Sullivan Av. That lone rail customer along this section of track has closed and Pine St street running is no more. The locos: 7316 went to Lambton Diesel Specialists in 2012 after being retired by CN in 2003. CN 7305 is now Prince Rupert Grain 7305.

  1. Thank you so much for posting this Arnold!

  2. More street running… excellent. Funny how these ‘little’ engines take on much larger proportions when contrasted against a Honda Civic rather than as SD40-2!

  3. Ah Love street running!

  4. One of the thrills of growing up on the hill where Merritton and Thorold met was seeing trains daily, and often on roads such as we see here, on Pine Street in Thorold. On Townline Road East too – where Merritton and Thorold met – you could find yourself sharing the road with a train. Similarly, there was a small spur line which ran from the paper mill on Merritt Street – just north of Townline Road – to a small mill on Front Street North in Thorold.

  5. My dad use to tell my stories about how odd it use to be when the train use to stop for the stop light here back in the 70′s.

  6. Funny how CN ran their SW1200′s nose to nose and CP ran theirs back to back… back in the day.
