A lot has changed in the nearly five years since this image was taken. It was raining when I shot this photo of VIA 60 heading for Oshawa, but the rebuilt F40s were still few and far between in the Toronto area and I wanted to see one paired with a Budd consist. The field in the background was just that: a field. It is now a construction site and will eventually be the site of GO Transit's new East Rail Maintenance Facility. Of course, the most poignant change is that VIA 6444 is no more. In February 2012, the locomotive derailed east of Aldershot while pulling train 92. 6444 derailed and hit a building, the impact killing all three of the crew in the cab. The locomotive was subsequently written-off. The TSB investigation found that excessive speed through a crossover caused the crash, but the reason for the speed will always be a mystery.
