Back to my oldies.. Here we have CN 513 heading west near Shedden Ontario. I was departing London after my "stag night" with a pounding headache (I wonder why!) and heard the OCS clearance on the St Thomas sub for 513 who was heading to the elevator at Rodney, mile 153 or so. The chase was on - my one and only shot at photographing a train on the CASO between St Thomas and Fargo - at this time CASO trains from St Thomas ran once a week with about 20 to 30 cars. A real shame they couldn't just run to Rodney from Chatham - why they abandoned it in this manner is beyond me, but given how the CASO was handled it's no surprise.

  1. Great shot Steve! I only got one train in the CASO yard once at St Thomas, other then that it was just the steam specials. Too bad it’s all gone now.

  2. You heard CN 513 get a clearance on the CP St.Thomas Sub?

  3. Corrected – was thinking St Thomas when writing :) Couldn’t shoot them in St Thomas proper, I wouldn’t have made it.

  4. Awesome shot!

  5. While CN 513 did run on the St. Thomas Sub (Joint track in St. Thomas) it would have been yard limits, thus no clearance.. I believe.

However, I do recall CN getting work clearances on the St. Thomas Sub in the joint track section at Ingersoll in the CP days..

Stand to be corrected on that – the St. Thomas sub was an interesting multi-railway operation not all that long ago..
