On yet another overcast day in May of 1980, CP's switch job on the Waterloo Sub runs south, passing under CN's Guelph Sub.
CP would switch the Seagrams Distillery and a very small yard just to the NW of the distillery. I only rarely saw this operation - not having the patience to wait around, and radio or access inside information. It wasn't until I saw the photos by Greg MacDonnell in one of his books that I realized what an idiot that I was.
CN had a spur that ran up to Elmira. I walked over that track almost daily and I never photographed that operation - dumbass that I am.

  1. This is awesome. Don’t beat yourself up. Not many did the branchlines back in the day!

  2. And this is now a walking trail…

  3. Very nice. Sister 8163 became OSR 1245. Did snow accumulate on this line in the winter? I ask this because the unit has the striped plywood under the front grab irons in front of the radiator.

  4. That stripes plywood, was as far as I know, only applied to the 8160, 8161 and 8162 that were permanently assigned to the GRR back then….winters in the 70′s or 80′s saw typically more snow then we see around this part of Ontario now.

Keep in mind these 3 units not only worked the “electric lines” north to Waterloo, but also south to Port Dover on Lake Erie.

  5. Actually, it was applied to many different SW1200RS locos. Here are some examples:
