Railpictures.ca - Bill Thomson Photo: Canadian Pacific U3e 0-6-0 6269 (built by CPR’s Angus Shops in 1912) has just arrived at CN’s Mimico Yard to switch CPR customers in New Toronto, working the Swansea Transfer job in 1954. The little 0-6-0′s, with no leading or trailing trucks, were ideal for use as yard switching and transfer locomotives as all the weight was on the drivers. Omer Lavallee’s “Canadian Pacific Steam Locomotives” says this locomotive was later converted to Shop Tool SL-6 in 1956. Note the fluid lines around the cab roof and windows. Steam locomotives were really utilitarian objects of art. There is something comforting and familiar about a functional steamer.
