Wooden caboose CN 78642, the Sioux Lookout Auxiliary sits on display just south of yard and town of Sioux Lookout Ontario.  CN 78642 rebuilt in Moncton in 1948, was originally built by ACF in 1912 as GTW 83287.  Just across the road is an MLW 0-4-0 steam engine, Canada Creosoting 102 which was built in 1923 for the Quebec Development Company.  If you look closely at this photo, you can see the tail end of the wye  behind the caboose, along with the current CN office/bunkhouse in the background (building with the green roof).  Like many places in Northern Ontario, Sioux Lookout is a shadow of its former self railway wise with few signs of the rich railroading history still visible.  The town used to feature an 18 stall roundhouse, large yard and just east of Sioux Lookout at Superior Junction, the Graham Sub diverged southwards to Thunder Bay.  All that remains today is a small yard and empty fields where the servicing facilities used to be located.  The original station at Sioux Lookout has been renovated to serve passengers from VIA's Canadian.  CN crews still trade off here, with Winnipeg crews handling trains on the Redditt Sub and Sioux Lookout crews working the Allanwater sub to Armstrong.  As for the Graham Sub, it was abandoned and Superior Junction was renamed Superior.  You can still see where the word Junction was painted over and the former right of way climbing away from the mainline and heading south into the forest towards Thunder Bay.

  1. Good to see 102 is still around. When our family went through on the Super Continental in 1972 it was located behind the station.
