A late afternoon Canadian National commuter train from Toronto stops at Port Credit Station in 1957. Power today is CNR 5250, the first of the J-7-a class Pacifics built by MLW in 1918 (originally built as Canadian Governmental Railways 478). As dieselization progressed on Canadian railways in the mid-late 1950's, the remaining steam power was often found in or relegated to less glamourous duties, including commuter runs, freight service, local assignments, pusher/helper service (like CP 2839 *here*) and extra/standby duties. 5250 was scrapped the next year in June 1958.

  1. It is too bad I can only give this picture one Star. I’d like to give it 4. This is the earliest memory I have of trains; the steam powered commuter train arriving in Port Credit. Thank you for posting this one Bill.

  2. Another excellent image from your wonderful collection! Thank you for posting, Sir!
