Some days you're better off staying in bed, and this was one of mine. It actually started the previous day, internal problems with the locomotive affected the drivability so negatively that I was barely able to limp home on the second-last run and get the old girl in the shed and take out the diesel to do the final run. To make a long story short, we thought we'd figured an easy fix and tried it out the next morning, but soon discovered it was worse than ever. Didn't even make it out of the yard to back up and hook onto the coaches. Had another engineer in the diesel start to push us back into the shed, but traversing the turntable the link-and-pin coupler caused a bit of lateral force, which caused the bit of slop in the turntable lock to allow a bit of misalignment. A rear flange caught the end of the static rail and rode up on it. The rails were still wet after a heavy morning fog and the diesel couldn't stop in time and this is what resulted. The locomotive has since been re-railed and put to bed, and we think we've narrowed down the internal fault to a hole in the pipe from the steam dome to the turret. Unfortunately we probably won't be able to get this fixed before the "official" end of Steam Season this coming Saturday.
