The Jarvis Railway Station, a local landmark, finally embarked on its second leg of the 2 mile+ junket departing from its century acreage at the north end of the village of Jarvis at approximately 9:30 hours Tuesday, Oct 18th.  The unique ‘union station’ with its two operator bays is to be re-located to the grounds owned by the Walpole Antique Farm Machinery Association (WAFMA) at the south end of town HWY 6.  However to get this 40 feet 8” widest point x 30 feet high x 45 feet long structure to the relocation site, it had to be hauled a short distance east on the recently graded stone rail bed of the former CN Cayuga Subdivision (how appropriate is that?) then south across a clay field to a temporary resting spot at the intersection of HWY 3 and Regional RD 55.  Drainage ditches on both shoulders of HWY 3 must be filled and leveled in preparation for a tight, diagonal crossing at 8:30 hours on Wednesday, Oct 19th.  While overhead wires present challenges, the more critical part of the maneuver is guiding the station between  two uprights (poles) with mere inches to spare on either side ... center, level and steady as she goes. Once clear of HWY 3, the last leg should be less hectic albeit though another serious of fields / open land and one more drainage ditch ... to hopefully transpire before any further rainfall. The first leg actually took place on 13 04 2016 and simply involved moving the station off site to make way for another Tim Hortons coffee outlet.
In this photo, Cec ABRA Building Movers (Branchton, ON) can be seen turning south off of the firm rail bed of the former CN Cayuga Subdivision onto cropped fields. An 850 G Case long track was called on to provide pulling assistance to the Western Star on one brief occasion. The grey pickup truck (back right) is parked on the old rail bed.  Southern Ontario Railway (SOR) still utilize 1 km+ portion of the CN Cayuga Subdivision (with connecting track to Hagersville Subdivision) east of Regional RD 55 for rail car storage.  WAMFA is spear heading a community effort to save and relocate this historic structure as a museum and testament to the importance of railways to the heritage of the Jarvis area.  Donations from interested parties gratefully received.

  1. It’s a shame it couldn’t have been left on its old property and incorporated into the new plaza. At least it has been saved :)

  2. Glenn, glad you were there to photograph it! It was my plan to capture it being moved, hence the first photos I took of it. So I also thank you for mentioning that shot of mine from March too. It is a great picture….and hopefully you will post another one of it at it’s new home to end the saga! :)

  3. The third leg today went well and earlier this evening I stopped into WAFMA … sure enough, the station is in one piece and parked along side her new foundation. The crossing of HWY 3 and execution by the WAFMA team and service crews was expedient, flawless and according to plan. The exercise today starting at HWY 3 certainly attracted many locals and interested spectators all with their own vehicle (so it appeared). KUDOS to Larry Moyer & gang, WAFMA and ABRA!
