I had never shot the CPR line to the Maritimes while it was under CPR control but made a number of trips to photograph the action during the Iron Road era. Eventually they had a fleet of repainted locomotives in a scheme patterned after CPR's maroon & grey scheme. Early on though CDAC 40 was the only locomotive on the property in the corporate scheme so it was great to get it leading.

If things went according to plan you could pick up an eastbound in the early morning out of Farnham or Sherbrooke and chase it to Megantic and then wait around for #901 to show up. In 1997 track speed was not subject to the many slow orders that would come so chasing could be a challenge.
