It has been a long time since I shot this photo, just over 41 years ago, and my caption is open to correction. I believe these GP40-2L Widecabs, built in early 1974, are drained and stored due to a downturn of traffic a couple of years later. The column consists of CN 9408 thru 9419, minus the 9412 which was off on another track with long end damage due to a minor derailment of some sort. No idea how long these units remained stored.

  1. I recall reading that storing the almost new units some how preserved a portion of the GMD warranty. Several were also stored inside NSC in Hamilton.

  2. The units were in storage due to a downturn in traffic. Gear ratios normally would not affect if a locomotive is stored or not.

  3. Is the 60/17 on the cab side about these units being geared differently? A likely reason they are sidelined.
