The jointly operated Canadian National / Grand Truck Western "Maple Leaf" westbound train #159 stops at the station in St. Marys on CN's Thorndale Sub while enroute to Chicago in 1969. GTW steam-generator equipped "torpedo-tube" GP9 4913 leads another sister GTW unit, with a CN RS18 likely trailing. Operating over CN in southern Ontario from Toronto to Chicago via Sarnia, the Maple Leaf would be discontinued two years later when newly formed US passenger operator Amtrak took over GTW's passenger train services.Other notable things in this scene include the semaphore signals on the right, a good amount of cargo waiting on the baggage cart, and the speeder car parked to the side just before the trestle.

  1. Great photo!

According to the Sarnia Historical Society mixed trains would have stopped using the forest sub in the late 60′s – how did passenger trains take advantage of the local infrastructure when they ran over the forest sub? Would the northern St Marys Jct station have been used ?
