HUMBER VALLEY VISTA. The incredible engineering feat of building a railway through this narrow section of the Humber Valley is evident in this scene taken from Coach 757 of Terra Transport's Extra 945 West on April 20, 1987. As the narrow gauge train snakes around the bend, the churning waters of one of the Island's most famous salmon rivers, the Humber, rush by Shellbird Island on the bottom right. Said to contain hidden pirate's treasure, this area was explored and charted by Captain James Cook some 225 years earlier with the railway going through around 1896/97. A favourite pastime in this area is locating the 'Man in the Mountain' a natural rock formation in the shape of a face on the upper right that looks down upon the the little island. With just a few miles to go, the photographer and his girlfriend's 138 mile journey (and first time on a Newfoundland train) from Bishop's Falls would soon come to an end in Corner Brook.
