Fort Steele's MLW 2-6-2 # 1077 approaches the station on completion of it's 4 km round trip journey to the observation deck overlooking the confluence of the St. Mary and Kootenay Rivers. Built in 1923 as a wood burner for use in forestry service it was later converted to oil burning to eliminate the risk of hot sparks from the stack. After retiring from active service it was rebuilt and came to Fort Steele in 1989 where it has been the faithful workhorse since.
