I mentioned in this shot of 108 that 1859 was out too, and on a whole, things were productive around Niagara on this morning. Here, 1859 has just come off the Canal Spur and onto the Harbour Spur, headed for Port Colborne with tanks for Jungbunzlauer and a couple of grain hoppers for the Port. There were hoppers sitting around the old Robin Hood mill too, so they may have had work there as well. I ventured on to other things though, and didn't follow 1859 further south on this particular day. The tanks in the background are on 108's train, which was waiting shy of the switch for 1859 to clear. The tanks are from the biodisel plant, headed for interchange at Feeder.

  1. James, you did it again ! Beautiful shot of an old Alco still hard at work decades after it was built. And a informative description of what is happening. Am I correct in assuming 1859 is about to travel on to the ex-
NS&T Welland Sub track toward Port Colborne ? And is the old Robin Hood mill at Humberstone active again ?

  2. Thanks railwayguy.

I can’t say I know the lineage of the line but it’s the one Trillium runs which is on the west side of the canal.

And yes, there is activity at the old Robin Hood mill again https://www.niagarathisweek.com/news-story/9291665-port-colborne-back-in-the-grain-game/ .. last winter CP sent a couple of unit grain trains down there which Trillium slowly took to the old mill.. see this link http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36745

  3. James, after some reviewing some old pictures and NS&T employees timetable, 1859 is curving from the former Wabash-CNR Airline ( now the line to/from Feeder, onto the original NS&T Welland Sub track , running south . 1859 is about to cross Forks Rd E and
NS&T stop 25 ( wooden waiting shed was on SE corner of Forks Rd E level crossing). The NS&T Diamond was with CN’s Airline was north of Forks Rd E just before the
Airline bridge over the old Welland Canal which I believe Trillium is still using today. The NS$T track south from Dain City runs parallel to Elm St on the west side until it curves to the east over Elm, just south of Invertose Dr (International Metal Salvage). This curve was the “new” trackage built sometime after NS&T electric operations ended to avoid the street running further south down the
middle of Elm before curving east to CN’ s Port Colborne Station. To me, amazing 60 yeaers later this part of the NS&T is still in operation. Thanks for the link to the article on Robin Hood Flour Mill at Humberstone.

  4. Thanks for the history. I’d honestly never explored the origins of this line.
